Groomers, Opinions please!
 

I received the FOS email from PPE pets. A lot of the sale items are grooming supplies. I would really like to buy a clipper kit to do touch ups at home. I would really appreciate any input. I'm a novice and I'm learning as I go with my little man.

If you can purchase an Oster, they're quieter, less anxiety on your pet, stay cool longer and of course last longer.

What I would do is go to preferably a show and try to handle lots of different makes of clippers, if that is not possible a large pet store that carries a few different brands.

Two reasons some I found awkward for my hands, (they are small) and I have arthritis to boot. The weights of different models are lighter heavier etc.
I have a mini cordless for Razz I quite like it is cordless which I really like. But there is not a lot I use the clipper for as he is in show coat.

Kaji is a soft coated yorkie. Short coat works best for us. I don't want to spend a lot on grooming since no one seems to get him done how I want. Yes, I'm very picky. Plus his hair grows crazy fast, which means I'll be spending a fortune on grooming alone.

Thanks Mary for the tip. Would the little one be ok to use on his ears? I don't like to keep them too short, but not long either.

i don't like pet clipper kits. everything usually breaks and its a waste of money. and you don't need the power deshedder that comes with the first kit. yorkies don't have an undercoat and the tool would just be damaging his skin and coat.

I prefer Andis clippers. The one I have is so quiet and light, plus it fits great in my hand. Its a little too pricey though for your needs.

Before I was a groomer I too found that taking Morgan to the groomer every 6 weeks was annoying and would be expensive. It was about $55. So i figured if i bought a good clipper and some blades I would be saving money in the long run. I ended up purchasing the Andis Ultra Edge, along with a 30, 10, 7F, 5F, and 4F blade so I can experiment with lengths. 30 for pads and ears, 10 for sanitary, and the 7, 5, and 4 for different short body lengths.

When i went to grooming school they gave me an Andis two speed clipper which was slightly less powerful then the Ultra Edge and a little cheaper. Good for small dogs with good coats but not for the big hairies and matted messes that I get in the shop.

Sorry to ramble, but the point I was trying to make was to spend the money on a quality clipper and blades now, so that you won't have to pay to replace the crappy one later, or pay for crappy haircuts.

I agree with Kalina, professional ones with blade choices and more than one blade is same size is preferble, Single blades get hot quick if you do not know what you are doing you will burn the dog. So be cautious and careful but go professional. I own both Whal and Oster, I prefer the Whals, quiter, weigh less and faster clipper speed than the oster

100% Oster...I have groomed for over 35 yrs and only needed to replace it once...and that was because I dropped on a concrete floor...

Reviving this thread. Any specific clippers recommendations for the Andis or the Oster?

Kaji has a soft coat and what I had been using couldn't get through his coat.

I have an Oster A5 with a #10, #40 & #7F, which I was using to trim Zhoie. I found it's big/bulky to use on such a small dog. I never use this one anymore.

Couple months ago I picked up an Oster 5 in one and I love it. It's a dial head with five blades, can be use plugged in or cordless. It works great for her and the #9 even shaves her back to the length I like. However, it may get hot if his coat is dense. Oster A5 would probably be the way to go.

My lil sis had a grooming business and still does it on the side. She has the Oster A5... She shaved Riley's ears for me with it a couple weeks back. It seemed to be pretty quiet.

I still say go for the Andis Ultra Edge or the other black two speed. I bought the Ultra Edge before I was a groomer along with some Andis blades to use on Morgan's soft coat.

I went to Amazon.com the other day looking for an Andis or an Oster, and there is just so much to choose from.
