Grooming Business question Hopefully, this is the right place to post this question. For quite some time, I've been thinking about starting my own grooming business. My dogs are my passion and I really enjoy getting away and grooming not only my dogs but my friends dogs. I'm very familiar with grooming my own yorkies and friends' maltese but I've never groomed any other breed before. I'm trying to figure out how to get started. I've looked at a couple grooming schools but i don't have the ability to go somewhere for 6 months with my current career and family (skin and fur!). I've ordered a couple all-breed grooming books and pet care business books to help me get started. Does anyone out there have any tips for me? Suggestions on books, video's, schools? I've also been hoping to find someone in the grooming business who wouldn't mind being a mentor to me. Please pm me if interested! I promise to limit by bugging as much as possible! LOL Thanks so much! |
You can try visiting some of the grooming shops in your area, owner/groomer type, not something like Pet smart or shops owned by someone else who just hires a bunch of groomers. You can talk to them, see if they are interested in training you should you continue with this idea. But I think the best first step, is to see if you can hang out in a good shop, help them for a day or two for free, kind of like volunteer. That will give you a much better idea of what is really involved in being a professional grooming in a shop. It is not what you likely think it is from the previous experience you have had doing your own a friends maltese. |
There is an online groomers forum that has a section on how to start and operate a business. They even sell outlines for business plans, but there is plenty of good free info about startup costs and more. Just Google "dog groomers forum." |
Thanks Lorraine. Thats a great idea! I'm going to stop by a couple of places to see if i can talk to the owners directly. I don't mind working for free to learn the ropes and see what its really like. That would really give me a good idea of what its like it a business type setting and also help me learn what equipment works best if I decide to go through with starting one. My worry is that a lot of grooming business owners 1. might now want to train as that would mean competition for them 2. might not want to risk a bad groom for a client as i'll be in the learning phases and might not get it quite right the first couple of times. Its worth a shot! :) |
Thanks Kristin! I'll check that out too! |
