When to go to the groomer? Bella is a little over 4 mos old. Some parts of her look like they could stand to be trimmed, but others not so much. I'm sure it depends on the length and fullness of the individual puppy's coat, but when do you usually take them for their first groom? Also, I bath her here once a week. Is that too often? She doesn't mind the bath so much, but HATES the blow dryer! She tries to attack it and yelps so loud! I feel like I'm abusing her or something?! I turn it on low heat and speed and I use the cooling button. Idk what else to do? Guess I could just let her air dry? :confused: |
As long as she's had all her puppy shots, she can be groomed. Once a week if growing the hair long and every two weeks or so if in a shorter cut. She just needs to get used to the dryer. Try putting cotton balls in her ears to reduce the noise. |
Good advice ^^, as long as your puppy has had all of vaccinations, you can take her to the groomer. Taking her sooner than later would be best for getting her accustomed to the process. A professional groomer may help acclimate your pup to the dryer. Make sure the groomer you choose does not use cage dryers. Bathing once a week is fine. Keep working with your pup and the hair dryer. I let my boys run around (zoomies :D) first before they sit for the dryer. Make everything fun and be calm and confident. Don't try to comfort her in such a way that it will reinforce her fears. Use treats and try following up grooming sessions with something really fun/desirable so that she will look forward to that. |

I started taking mine to the groomer as soon as they had their shots- at the beginning she just bathed them, blow dried and did some minor trimming (sanitary, feet, etc.) This way they get used to all the sights and sounds of the groomer from and early age and are easier for the groomer to handle. When they were young I stayed with them the whole time though. |

I just took my little 5 month old to the groomer for her first visit. They said she did well, overall, but got a little crazy during her nail clipping. When she came home she seemed fine and appeared to have a good experience. I know tons of people say to bathe a work frequently, but you really shouldn't give them too many baths. Once every four to six weeks, especially in the winter, is plenty. Their skin is delicate and we have to remember, they are dogs and like to smell like a dog, even if we don't always like it :) A great book is "Inside a Dog", by Alexandra Horowitz, a Phd in Animal Behavior Science. She really gives some great insight into dogs and dog behavior, based on academic/scientific research, which most training programs are NOT based on. But, perhaps I'm partial to this type of thinking because I, too, am an academic. But it really helps give some perspective on dog ownership. |

You can safely bathe your dogs more than every 4-6 weeks- mine would smell and look awful if I waited that long. Plus- I don't think dogs like to stink- I don't think they know either way really. I on the other hand prefer something or someone sleeping in my bed NOT stink ;) |

Thanks for all the great advice/tips. I think I am going to start looking for a groomer tomorrow then. Poor baby that got burned by that dryer! That's awful and I can't begin to imagine anything worse that has happened! Can any of you recommend what type of shampoo/conditioner you have had the most success with please? I too must agree, I could never wait 4-6weeks to bathe her. She didn't start out sleeping in our bed, but has somehow ended up there! :p I don't want her dirty and stinky in my bed for sure! :eek: |

Kiehl's is available at Barney's and online. Elissa may have another store name for you. More ideas for you: I use Biogroom products, Oatmeal shampoo, Fluffy Puppy shampoo, and Silk Creme Rinse. I also like Coat Handler products. I buy all of these online because few specialty shops carry them. |
Oh thank you! Maybe I will try them all eventually to see which ones I like best and work best for Bella. I will check our local feed store also. :) |
Sorry just seeing this- I get Eqyss at the all natural pet store I get the dogs food at. I get Kiehls at the Kiehls store- it is a "people" store so you can usually find it in malls. |
