Which direction to use clipper?!! OK, I'm totally confused. I have a grooming DVD that shows you to use the clippers (with 7FC or #4FC blade) front to back in the direction the hair grows. The YTCA site tells you to use the clippers back to front, AGAINST the growth of the hair. I keep Shadow's hair short (#4FC blade), can someone please tell me which direction I should be going? Thanks |
99% of the time clipping is done WITH the lay of the coat. However, you can clip in reverse for a shorter and more even look. I actually took a 4F in reverse to Morgan's body today. I do not like the way her hair looks after I clip her with the lay of the coat. I like everything short and uniform on her body. On the neck I will then take a 5 and go with the coat to clean up any hairs that I missed because of the cowlicks. When you clip in reverse the resulting cut will be shorter. So, for example, a 4 will take a coat to a 5 or 7 depending on the coat type. You need to be extra careful when clipping in reverse that you don't snag the skin. If you aren't comfortable with regular clipping then I wouldn't try reverse clipping. Oh, and where on YTCA does it say to clip in reverse? |
nevermind, I found the info on the site. Never noticed that grooming page before. The instructions there are very good and easy to follow. Reverse clipping does make a smoother finish on drop coats in my opinion. Just remember to start out with a longer blade to check the length it will leave. you can always switch to a shorter blade and take more off, but you can't put it back on. |
I would not reverse clip with any blade shorter than a 5 blade because you can clipper burn the skin. You should have the F series of blades such as 5F 4F these are full tooth blades and gives a smoother finish without having to reverse clip. Some coats that are very flat and straight you have to use a blade that leaves a short clip such as a 7F The regular 4, 5 and 7 blade is a skip tooth blade and can be used for rougher finishes and blending with a blade. |
Thanks for the info. I'm pretty comfortable using the clipper. Shadow doesn't mind it at all. I'll probably try the reverse for the summer, right now she needs the warmth. It's been a cold winter! I really wish I could watch someone grooming the dvd's only go so far. Thanks again. |
