SILKY? COTTON? Which Coat is Oskar wearing?

Please help, I'm unsure. Doesn't tangle or get matted, more curly in nature than flat or straight. He's 4.5 months old...is it too soon to tell?

Also is there a certain routine or products I should follow to keep his hair with a pretty good sheen?

IMO, Oskar has neither...he is what breeders call..a red legged Yorkie..that type coat rarely mats, easy to groom, hair will remain fairly short on legs and furnishings...and it can have a bit of have a tendency to break, rather then grow to the floor...but that is not important since you have a pet. The hair can have a bit of a coarser texture then silk, but better then cotton...he looks like a sweet boy.

Thanks for the feedback YorkieRose! A little disheartening since I had planned on him achieving this look below, but that just causes for a change of plans as far as grooming goes! Any tips or products to promote his hair from breaking?

A good conditioner and good brushes/combs should help prevent hair breakage. Use metal combs. For brushes, use Madan or Chris Christensen or something similar that doesn't have little balls at the end of the metal brush bristles. The balls are what break hair. There are many good conditioner choices, including Biogroom's Silk Creme Rinse.

Just like human hair, it is advisable to snip the tips of the hair shaft once a month to prevent split ends and breakage.

The body clip will be no problem...growing facial and leg hair on a red legs is difficult because it is genetic...but you have to realize I am not the "end all be all" authority on coats...look at pic's of red legs on YT and compare...the hair texture is a bit coarser, thus causing it difficult to achieve what you want...but he will look very cute in the clip pictured..only the furnishings and legs will be somewhat short...he may not get that color either, but I am sure that is not important.

I saw a redleg Yorkie at the dog park not long ago. His colors were so rich and beautiful. Your boy is going to be gorgeous!

That's the exact hair my girl's got! Never knew she was a red leg. I always wondered if I was doing something wrong with her hair. I thank you for the post and as always I learn something new here.

Ughhhh! I've been working on a look for my boy. I just love the haircut you attached. I don't know if we have the leg hair for it but it is very cute. Thanks for the idea. Your boy is very cute. Just to find the right "do" for him. I understand your quest.
