Best Brush for Facial/Mustache hair 1 Attachment(s) I have to brush Jackson's facial hair every other day or so to get it to look not so messy... you know, his mustache hair, around his muzzle and his bangs, etc. He HATES it -- he acts like it hurts him, and honestly, it probably does. I try to be as gentle as possible, but I'm sure it doesn't feel good. He gets tons of treats when we're doing it and tolerates it but I feel bad. I'm using a brush like pictured below... I bought it when he was a puppy, and I'm not sure it's the best for this. His hair is always kept short, so body brushing is not a big issue. This will mainly be used for his tail hair and his face. Any suggestions that won't cost a fortune? |
That looks like a slicker, which could be painful. For the face, I prefer to use combs, for safety, comfort and effectiveness. I use combs on the tail too. My favorite comb is the Chris Christiansen #6 buttercomb for face and legs. It is pricey, but I love that it is lightweight, the teeth ends are just the right sharpness, and it is easy to manipulate. Combs & Handles Any good, smallish metal comb would work. |
Have you tried a comb instead of a brush for his face? I'd recommend a Madan like Mimimomo sells, or a CC face/feet comb. That seems to work much better than brushes for my guys. |

I have one of each and couldn't live without them! |
Yeah, I agree with the others, you need to give him an extra hug if he's tolerated you using that on his face. I use a metal wide tooth comb, and finish off with the narrow side. |
Thanks! I forgot I had started this thread, hehe. Unfortunately, I can't really spend $40 on a comb right now. Plus his hair is so short most of the time, I can't justify the cost, lol. Question -- would this brush work well? |
It will work, because when I'm super lazy I use my brush that looks like that on Kaji. I think a comb is best for the face though. Helps clean out any gunk that can be left over in his face from food and sniffing the floor. |
I've had this comb for years and I like it. It's cheap but works nicely on the face and it's held up well. SAFARI 4 1/2" COMB, MEDIUM/FINE W558 |

You might want to try this brush if you don't want to use a comb. I found this earlier when I was looking for the small size wooden pin brush. This mini size might be good for the facial hair, if you want to use a brush. |

I like to use a litte flea comb on their face too. It is tiny, easy to manipulate and works like a charm. You still need a larger comb too but maybe you could start out with one of these little ones for the face. There are also less expensive metal combs at most pet stores. They aren't as nice as a butter comb but can do the job (especially when we keep the coat short) until we work up the nerve to spend the $40. I still haven't ordered a CC butter comb, even though I have been reading for years how much better they are. Still ..... seems like a lot for a comb. I should know from my painting though -- the tools DO make a difference. I remember when I bought my first $40 brush (talking tiny detail brush too). But it was so worth it! And at least these combs do last virtually forever, unlike the brush. |

Same. LOVE IT!!!! I didn't think it was too expensive and it works FANTASTIC. I also bought a Madan brush and a bigger comb for Rylie's body. I definitely highly recommend Mimimomo and her Madan supplies! |
I'm going to buy that comb today from Mimimomo. We have the light blue soft pin brush that we love. However, Cooper's hair is getting long and the brush isn't working so great for him because he has ultra thick cottony hair (maltese/yorkie mix). What would you recommend? |

She has a contact form on her site, toplinepet.com. Her site states that she will be glad to help you with picking out the right brush. I just emailed her on Rosie. |
