Confused about the Slicker brush after watching grooming video
 
So I ordered a grooming video for Yorkies, and I've only gotten a chance to get through a little past the tools needed so far, which is what I'm confused about. The lady was using a slicker brush when brushing out the yorkie..I was under the impression that this was only needed for dogs with undercoats? Any input? Thanks All :)

Grooming threads don't get as much "action", but they stay at the top longer. I thoroughly agree with you on this, a slicker brush is the worst thing you want to use on a yorkie. Yorkie hair is like human hair and there is no undercoat. Try using a slicker brush on your head and see if you think it's appropriate. Too many sharp pins! I've heard some do it to break up mats, but I think a matting comb would be better, and if mats are that bad, you should change your grooming routine. Pin brushes are great for removing mats, and I really like the wooden pin brushes, they aren't sharp at all. You never want to scratch a yorkies skin when brushing. Some people think slicker brushes add a shine to coat, but many others will use a boar bristle brush for this and the idea is to spread oil from skin, down shaft of hair. Slicker brushes are great for removing dead hair on dog with a double coat, but I don't recommend them at all for Yorkies.

A groomer told me to buy slicker brush and showed me how to use it. I did buy one and have used it a few times but noticed it was breaking off their hair. I no longer use it. I agree with Nancy the wooden pin is great.

Yes, I'm going to stick with a pin brush, I just cannot imagine a slicker used on a yorkie, we use them on our other two dogs, but not my yorkies!

I think many of us believe that if someone actually has a video, that they know what they are talking about, but in this day and age, anyone can make their own videos or post their own website, and there is no legitimate company behind that has editors that checks what they are saying. We have to become so careful on what we take as "fact". I would think that in the technical age it would be so easy to discern fact from fiction, but as I've seen on YT, it is not.

There are two free videos in the YT Library on grooming Yorkies... maybe watch all of them and gleen whatever works best for you. :D

Darlene; I've only used a slicker specifically a CC small slicker to break up one mat on Razzle. Mostly I use fingers and combs to break out mats.

Agree that the slicker is NOT for their hair at all. However the slicker on my two Blackies (much different type of coats) is indeed a very fine tool.

who made the video you purchased? just curious. i haven't watched any on yorkies.

Like Gemy, the only slicker i use on a yorkie is the tiny soft CC slicker brush, and that's only on mats with lots of detangling spray. I don't drag it through the hair but do more of a tap and pull method. then i use a stainless steel comb. I mostly use either a CC t-brush or the wooden pin brush on most dogs. i find they break the coat less which prevents future matting.

I have the x-small and my boss has the tiny. both are very very soft compared to other brands.
Pin Brushes
20mm small wood pin brush in purple
16mm t-brush
Combs & Handles
#000 Buttercomb

I also like CC Ice on Ice or Nature's Specialty Quicker Slicker as a leave in conditioner/detangling spray for combing/brushing/dematting.

As a breeder/exhibitor/groomer slicker brushes are not recommended. Unless you know when and how to use them (for removing mats) it's the fastest way to destroy a yorkie coat.

The only time I use a pin brush is in the ring, to seperate the coat and used with a anti-stat or conditioner sprayed on it.

Keep in mind groomers are not specialists for each breed. While they make sure that your dog is clean and looks adorable going out the door, their main focus is to groom as many dogs as they can on a given day. So, they will use tools to assist them in making their job easier not what is best.

Mary, Which is your most often used grooming tool? ( brush/comb)

I use an ISINIS Brush for most everything. Keep in mind you never brush a dirty coat or a dry coat. I use a slicker for feet, just prior to trimming, it seperates the hair on the feet and pulls to the right form I want it. I use several combs; all CC butter combs. As a final, final just before ring time I use a Mason Pearson Boar Bristle brush....but, in the ring I use a CC Pin brush and which Pin I use is dependent on the texture and density of the coat.

Do you have a link for the ISINIS Brush? Thanks :) When you use combs do you damp the hair as well?
