Hey all! :)

Rizzo has the infamous "stinky face" now that his hair is growing out :rolleyes: What do you guys use on your yorkies faces between baths? Because he is quite smelly around his muzzle, probably from dipping his "beard" in the water dish, lol. I brush it out every night, and I use toweletts and the toweletts don't really help take much of the funk off.

Any suggestions are welcome, I'd like to have a fresh smelling puppy :D

I use sterile eye wash or saline solution for the eyes. I wet the area and allow to soak in a bit to soften any goop in the hair. Then I comb it out first with the large spaced teeth of the comb to get any major knots out, the the narrow toothed comb. When they go through the hair easily, I use a flea comb (watch out not to snag any whiskers) which removes a ton of foreign matter. Then I wipe again with the sterile solution, comb again making sure I get down to the skin, and wipe again and then dry it with a cotton ball. If the smell doesn't clear up in a week after 3 or so cleanings, I apply antibiotic ointment for the eyes to the eyes and the skin around the eyes, after each session. Wipes seem to make things worse.

Hmmm...didn't know that wipes could make things worse. He doesn't really have an eye-goop problem (thank goodness) it's mostly just a stinky around the mouth, in the beard smell. He likes to drag his face in the grass outside, and when he eats and drinks the fur is right in there with him. I'll stop with the wipes though, I don't want anything to irritate his skin :S

Or change brand of wipes... may help. Also, use alot of conditioner on his beard, it helps seal the hair shaft and will make for easier cleanup of food and stuff. Make sure there's no hair getting stuck in his mouth... sometimes I think they use it as dental floss. You could use a shampoo formulated for daily use (Suave makes Daily Clarifying Shampoo for humans: won't strip all the natural oils out, just the dirty stuff). If the odor doesn't clear up, it may be good to have your vet check his skin... he may have a bacterial or fungal problem going on.

Also, if he's rubbing his face alot, that can indicate an allergy... usually to his food (chicken based is high up on the list of known allergens). Maybe try switching protein sources gradually to see if you notice any decrease in the face rubbing.

Last, but not least, feed him out of high quality stainless steel or ceramic bowls (approved for human food consumption would be good) for food and water. Plastics can leach out chemicals into the food and water that will affect sensitive dogs. Sensitivity can build up over a period of time too, so something he was okay with 2-3 months ago may not be okay with him now.

i see a lot of "stinky face" as a groomer. If its just in the beard area you need to make sure you wash his face after each meal, especially if he's eating wet food. For this i'd just use a warm wet washcloth, then comb it out with a flea comb. Try to keep his face as dry as possible (i know, easier said then done). If he is a face dunker with the water dish try switching to a water bottle. you can get a rabbit water bottle, or you can get an adapter that fits on standard plastic water bottles (like poland spring bottles). I did this with Morgan when she was a puppy cause she was messy.

If the face is stinky and you want to wash it i recommend a face scrub like South Bark's blueberry facial (smells amazing) or Espree foaming face wash (a few different scents). I have both. the foaming face wash is easier to use for just a quick clean up as its less "shampoo-y" then the blueberry facial. both need to be washed out. or you can try a dry shampoo which doesn't need to be washed out.
