Help with Nail Clipping/Hair Combing
 

I have my very first Yorkie, Charlotte, who is 6 months old. She has not had a full body cut yet because I don't want to ruin her adult hair; in the mean time, I am combing her hair myself so that it doesn't get matte or tangly. However, she HATES the comb! Even though I've used several tricks to get her accustomed to it, I have to feed her treats while trying to comb her in order to get anywhere with her. I also have to do the same thing with the nail clippers (even though she's never had any bad experiences with them), but she still hates it!

Does anyone have any tips to help in the grooming process? Thanks! :aimeeyork

I can help you. Cutting it wont ruin her adult coat. But if your goal is to have her in a long coat then do not cut it. IMO, you want a long coated dog or your wouldn't have chose this breed.

So, it's not up to her. That's the hardest thing to do and this will make the rest easier. Take control. You love her, but be in charge. Never mean only firm. Matter of fact, do not give in. Don't baby her too much through it. Get a shirt (pjs are great for this) with a pocket in them. But some good treats (no milk bones they're crummy) in it and let her know they're there. Put her on the surface you will groom. Dryer, bed, coffee table, not your lap b/c she will have more confidence standing than on her back or sideways. Besides, it's a rule you are establishing.

Make sure you have the correct tools to brush and comb her wet coat properly. I don't brush inbetween baths. Brushing a dirty coat breaks it. Some people use a conditioning spray to brush. Pet silk makes one that is cheap and works nice. There are many avail, pretty much the same.

Nails should be done after the bath b/c they're softer when they are wet. While she is standing lift her feet backwards to barely snip regularly. If she is too wild, hold her. Never cut w/o stop bleed on hand in case you snip (they can move you may never need it but better to be prepared).

All of these things will be done while you are teaching her you must often say words like good girl, then give her the cookie. If she knows you have the treats in your pocket she will act different. It should be the good treats, highly wanted ones. No shortcut on the buying of brush or comb. Some things you can take the shortcuts, not these. You must use a conditioner after shampooing.
