Human Conditioner??
 

Hey everyone! i don't yet have a yorkie but I have a question. I have heard a lot of people use a human conditioner but what kind? I wanted to use my conditioner just for convenience purposes but I have curly thick hair so that is the exact opposite of a yorkie's hair so that's not going to happen. I want to be able to get it at Wal-Mart because again for convenience purposes so I don't have to drive all the way to anywhere. Any suggestions??? :confused:

Most walmarts have pet conditioners in the pet section, next to the shampoos. I definitely saw an oatmeal conditioner in there once. AND if your walmart doesn't have it, they have this site-to-store feature on their website where you order something and they ship it to YOUR walmart free of charge.

OK, I know some people will jumb down my throat but here goes.
I use human shampoo on my yorkies all of the time. Human Shampoo is a different PH balance so I mix it half with water. I would advice using something really "perfumy" herbal essence but kinds like Biolage from the salon works and I am currently using Fructius. Yes, some people here will say never use human shampoo on conditioner on yorkies but mine have been fine. Just keep an eye out in case their skin gets itchy.

I've seen some here say they use Pantene Pro V 2x Icey shine.

All I have to say is don't buy Hartz shampoos - my 11 year old yorkie almost died when we last used it on him! I didn't know they had such a bad reputation for harming pets! Look it up on the internet. My baby became so sick and then was told by many people it was the Hartz shampoos. Never again. I will use our shampoos or as the vet said Dawn dishsoap and I use our conditioners and he looks and feels great! Just want you to know my experience - very scary!!

Yes I have used this but only for show days. I'm in the camp that says use dog shampoos and conditioners designed for dogs.

Having said that, if you do use the human shampoos I'd go for as natural a product as possible. Also check their skin frequently for redness, sores, or itchiness.

This is what I use. It's been about a year since I purchased 1 bottle of shampoo and 2 bottles of conditioner. I give weekly bathes to my 3 plus up until last Christmas I also had a foster. It's very thick so I use a separate bottle and add water to both. I am not almost at the point of needing to order more.

Planning to get a yorkie and preparing to care for them the wrong way isn't what we like to hear. Set your new baby up for success. You'll feel better knowing you do everything the right way or choose a breed that coat care isn't such a priority. If you are looking for a shortcut, try using a conditioner I use. It's called Day to Day, made by Chrissy Systems. You can use it on yourself even though it's made for them.

I don't think it matters as far as how the fur will feel. My yorkie feels soft and looks shiney afterwards. You know their fur is a little coarse - so anything that softens it and makes it easier to comb is fine. Just watch those eyes as usual - we have a hand held shower and he loves that - especially if you rub it up and down his back!! Its funny to watch! He definately does not want the water or anything else on his face so that is a bit of a fight - but it has to be done! I just wish he would let me clip the fur on his face - he tries to bite if we do try to clip it - he really just clamps down on your hand - so I am not afraid of that but I am scared that when he moves the clippers or the scissors might get in his eyes and hurt him! I have tried a muzzle - can't get it on him and he will still move around - the vet says to bring him to them and they will give him a sedative and do it - but he's 11 years old and has some health issues and is blind in one eye for sure - very hard of hearing - but the hair in his face doesn't help his eyesight - anybody out there have a good idea for me on this one?? I would be so thankful for something that would work for my poor little guy - he looks a little rough now!

well so far i have tried a few shampoos out there and they really don't do much for bella first i started with sentry flea and tick shampoo and it didn't even kill the fleas, so then i heard about the dawn soap and i can say it did kill some fleas but not all. i also started using my little girls conditioner which i really love it's loreal for kids grape i love the way it leaves bellas hair and also it smells so good it's extra gentle. i just make sure i rinse it out really good.the bottle is shaped like a little fish. a lot of people tell how good she smells :) :p

Well news to me - but I found out from my vet that human shampoo's are just fine - but there are no really good shampoos to kill fleas - even the one's made to kill them! He said you will get some off - but as soon as they go outside or even in your house -more will just jump back on! He said get the flea drops from the vet and then buy a shampoo that will not nutrealize the flea drops! I did not know that shampoo would make the drops ineffective when you use it. He sold me a bottle of shampoo - can't remember the name that will not do that. He said just make sure of that and it really doesn't matter what you use. You can use human shampoos - because all your really doing is cleaning the dirt and oils and you want to make sure that you don't use something that will dry their skin - which of course makes their scratching worse and can lead to skin abraisions and infections. He says there is alot of different kinds to buy - doesn't matter what it is as long as it doesn't make the flea drops ineffective! Who knew?? Didn't even think about that happening! Good info to know! But do not use the Hartz Flea & Tick Shampoos!! Go to the "No more Hartz Victims" website and your eyes will be opened by the blogs there! It is so scary and it happened to us! We almost lost our old buddy Gizmo to this crap!

Different vets give different information. Did your drops not work? What drops do you use?

Elle- the drops I have used did work - they are from my Vet - they are called Vectra - they seem to work much better than the ones that are commonly used or prescribed - can't think of the other real common one that is out there - you probably know what they are! But anyway the Vectra seem to really do the trick! But the vet said any of them can be neutralized by using the wrong kind of shampoo. Ask your vet when you get a chance - I would be very curious if they say thats true or not - I did not know that before - I just wouldn't have thought of that happening. My Gizmo is also allergic to flea's - so they cause him to have a rash which also makes for some itching! So we have to do some other pills from time to time - I believe they are a type of steroid to stop the itching and the rash. Who knew they could be allergic to fleas? I just thought of things like grass or food - the usual type things. I just keep getting educated all the time! But the shampoo I purchased is a hydrating shampoo and it works pretty darn good - as far as cleaning and a good smell and making his fur soft. Gizmo is 11 years old and he is not into us doing a whole lot with his grooming anymore - so we try not to pester him too much because of his age. We just try to keep him happy!

Vectra has Permethrin in it. Shampoo is said to wash it out. I wouldn't put it on an animal. My vet said it's no concern. Sometimes we shampoo the same day it's applied. :)

I've known yorkies to be allergic to fleas. It's not rare.
