Really need help/tips with clipping the nails of what seems to be a terrified yorkie. I clip the nails of Bailey and my boyfriends two dogs with no problems, they are very good about it. I've had 2 year old Jesse for a month and today it was time to clip his nails. Well he freaked! I could not hold on to his paw for the life of me once he saw the nail clippers, and you could tell he was really scared. I had to stop trying because I felt so bad for him. This is the first grooming problem I've encountered with Jesse, He is fairly good about baths, he is quiet with the blow dryer and comb outs, no problems trimming His privates and brushing is teeth. Does anyone have any advice? |
33 Views and no advice :( I really didn't want to take him to a groomer because I am afraid they will scare him more, but will probably have to then. |
can you have someone else hold him while you clip the nails? you need them to have a secure hold on the dog so he can't wiggle or bite. have the person sit on the floor with the dog in his lap or place the dog on a table and have the person stand at its side. put one arm over the back and under the belly/chest and the other arm under the neck and around the head/neck area. then secure the dog snugly against the person's chest so the dog can't move. you should be able to trim the nails now. for extra help you can also place a towel over the dog first, then hold in the same manner but make sure the eyes are covered. sometimes this helps. |
How about distracting him with yummy treats? Allie tolerated grooming but if I take too long on one area, she gets restless, annoyed... so I give her favorite treats |

What about going with just a straight file? It might take you longer, but if it helps keep him calm, it's worth it. |
Allie is picky with her food, but not really her treats. I get Stella & chewy's beef or chicken treats, sometimes peanut butter captain crunch. |
