What is the best way to get rid of tangles? I know the obvious answer is to prevent them in the first place. But once they do occur, is there an easy/ preferred way of removing them? Scarlett is going to have an extremely thick coat and she loves to roll around and rough house. Unfortunately she also HATES being brushed out. So what can I do to minimize the stress on her and me as her coat is growing back out? Thanks. |
Well, duh! No sooner did I finish typing this question when I saw this hint: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ats-works.html It definitely looks like something I might try- though I'm wondering if using corn starch might be a better option since talcs can cause aspiration pneumonia if inhaled. Any one else have any tricks? |
If there is a tough matt that I cannot work out, I cut into it as few times with the scissors, be careful not to get any skin. then it usually comes out quite easy. It is less noticeable than cutting the matt off. And with the thick coats I just feel it can use a little thinning anyway. :D |

Cotton/soft coats, forget it, it doesn't work you are going to be stuck keeping it relatively short. A fine silk will be harder to keep mat free but will require diligent brushing. Some silk types are easy to keep mat free even when it is longer in length. |
I *think* she has a silky coat, just incredibly thick. Since she's a rescue, I have no idea about her lineage. It has a definite "cool" hand to it versus Rhett's warmer, coarser coat. |
The cornstarch works like magic and is at least a natural product, unlike talc. |
I use a little flea comb I picked up at the groomers to get the mats out of Bilbo's coat. The black is kind of thick and never mats, but the gold is very fine and mats very easily. He likes to run around in the country and also gets grass seeds and burrs in his coat. I start at the skin with the flea comb, and between it and my fingers, I just work the mats out. I have never had to cut any of his mats out, although it is a lot of work to get them out. |
