Questions about oil???
 
Hi everyone! I'm new to the show ring and have some questions or need some
advice in regards to grooming.
First of all, most people have said to put my pup in oil which I did but I
watched a video yesterday that said that one of the top handlers does not
believe in using oil at all, not even with wrapping. I was wondering what others thoughts on this are?
Secondly, I have hm in oil but I have always wondered if I should alternate
being in oil with being with out any product? In other words, should I just
wash him out every 4 days and then re oil? Or should I put him in oil for 4 days
and then wash and leave without oil for 4 days?

I'm too new to the show world, but I think you have to figure it out for your pup what is best I do put oil on coat and wrap. I'm looking forward to other answers.

Hi. I tried to visit your website but it wouldn't load. I've found there are as many different opinions on oil as there are.... well, you know.

Your best bet is the breeder who sold you your show dog. Have you contacted her with your questions?

While I am still learning in this also I have found that it all depends on what works for your dog. I have tried, Almond oil, Nutrogena oil, and petsilk coat oil. None gave me results I was impressed with. I then started using the Vellus satin cream and I have been impressed so far. I also talked to a few show breeders and they say that if you use oil on your dog you will always have to use oil. Their reasoning is because dogs produce their own oil and if you use oil then eventually the dog stops producing their own oil. To me it made sense because when I was showing Bolt I would put him in oil but when he would go home his owner would mention that he was flaking. He would come back to my home and be put in oil. So I am guessing it was because he had been in oil at my home but not at his owners and his body wasn't producing the oil to keep his skin from flaking. So I switched to the vellus and the problem went away.

Yes I have. She recommends oil and I know she knows what she's talking about but it's just not really giving me the results I want and then I've been hearing from many people who say not to use oil so I'm just looking to see what experience others have had.

Makes sense Lori. I also posted this question on a show breeding forum and not one person has agreed with using oil - now not all of those people are yorkies breeders - and I know that many others highly recommend it but I just am not all that happy with the results I'm getting with Mickey's coat. Maybe it's because he's still young... Then I watched a video the other night and it says that Kristen McGregor does not believe in using oil at all. Which is what prompted me to post this question. I have a few other recommendations and I'm still weighing my options but would love to hear more input....

To oil or not that is the "question". I like the Moroccan oil for Razz's coat, and I've used quite a few other products. I only oil up about halfway then wrap.

What are you unhappy about with Mickey's coat?

I am about to return to the world of show Yorkies:D after a very long break, and I too have been researching the pros and cons of oiling-I had a Multi BIS winner back in the early 80's and his coat was oiled-it was a given in those days that show coats were oiled. From what I can gather it is very much a matter of what suits your particular dog, and when I eventually get my pup I am going to experiment. I can't remember having any problems with oil on my old dog, or with his coat after he was retired and clipped short, I only ever oiled his hair, it never got on his skin, I can't see that it would have any effect on the natural oils a dog produces themselves.

Oil? Mobil 1 5-40 is outstanding. You can also use a little for weapon lubrication and leepong rust off metal tools and shovels.

I'm experimenting with different oils, and I even mix it, lavender, coconut, olive, castor, almond, fig, jojoba, sesame, vitamin e etc, etc, I add a little on the shampoo or conditioner, so far I like the sesame oil also has uv protection, I started using on my own hair love it, is heavier so you don't need much, at all, I just bathe Melody today, I made some chamomile tea then I add a little of vitamin e and very tiny, tiny of sesame oil, she look great and not itchy at all, I think the best think is to experiment until you find the right one or the right combination, is what I'm doing and I'm having so much fun:p:thumbup:

Have you tried any Summerwinds products(protect a coat) or Pure Paws Light Oil? I am just experimenting with these and so far like them. Alot of breeders in AZ love the Pure Paws Light Oil. But maybe its because its soooooooooooooo hot and dry here.

I need to clarify that I use the chamomile tea as a final rinse and I leave in;)
