He;s a pretty boy. Are you wrapping his coat? If not the coat could be breaking because of contact with carpet, grass, etc. Does your boy love to rub his body and roll in the grass, or on the carpet? Do you put clothes on him a lot?
All these things can damage the coat.

Also what you can try once a month or so is to just trim a very little from the ends of his coat.

Are you using supplements in his food to promote coat growth?

No i dont wrap his hair. We dont have carpet in our house but he does like to roll on the chair and on the door mats and I never put him in clothes. I feed him Blue Buffalo "Wilderness" with high protein. Should i feed him supplements for hair growth and if so what is a good supplement to use?

Genetics plays a significant role in whether or not a coat will reach the floor, and how long it will take to get there. A healthy diet is important, but supplements won't change genetic predisposition.

Use good shampoo and conditioners, don't over-brush or use harsh finishing products.

Supplements while they are of some benefit, and will only help a bit. What his life style is plays a big part in coat growth. Furniture, carpet, concrete, grass, sleeping with you.....

I also just measured him and he's kind of/really tall from shoulder to floor he's 11 1/2 so maybe its just going to take him longer to grow floor length hair because of his height. What do you guys think?:confused:

My boys are about the same height, tall and long-legged. :) Height is somewhat of a factor. In my limited Yorkie experience, I have seen shorter, cobby body Yorkies grow floor-length coats in their first year.

As the exhibitors indicated above and in the thread I linked, they go to a lot of trouble to help their show dogs grow long coats. Wrapping is a big part of that, to protect the hair from breakage caused by daily wear and tear.

I heard that a tiny bit of coconut oil mixed with their food is good for skin and coats. Ask "Morkie4" she knows a lot on how to get a good looking long coat. She LOVES the long coats.:p

You should NOT have to buy show quality nor wrap to to obtain a pet quality yorkie with a coat that will hit the floor without too much chaos. Words from my carpal tunnel coat care fingers, but yes! pet quality yorkies should meet the standard.

Now, yours appears to have a true silk coat. Nice blue but with this comes slow growing. Because it is only one photo I'm making an assumption based on only one photo. But the gold is not so strong. So I'm only saying the blue is nice and silk in the photo. He's old enough to have a full coat months ago, many factors. Evaluate his play, if it's breaking or not. He may have that gene that doesn't grow coat.

Somewhere I read that a Yorkie isn't fully mature till 3 years of age, at which time the coat may reach the floor.

Mine rolls on carpet, in leaves, hardwood floors, in the bed, never wrapped, and I just trimmed about an inch or two off his coat...he was tripping over it. But he's 13 years old...

Good, quality food, coconut oil, wild Alaskan Salmon oil, and glucosamine supp for his joints and CT.... made his nails grow quicker too. :D

what does wrapping the coat mean?

The coat is oiled and divided in sections. Each section is wrapped with special paper and folded up and secured with a band. This keeps the long, show coats off the ground and prevents breaking of the hair.

Sometimes I do the butts if they are having a bout of diarrhea or sticky poop, keeps their hair cleaner.

I have yorkies with different coats. Two of them have unbelievably beautiful floor length coats that must be trimmed because they would be dragging hair; and I don't give them coconut oil or any of the other supplements that many have suggested.
I believe each one is simply different.

I think he looks great, give it time, just be gently with his hair and use conditioning products. I am a hairdresser I use the highest quality hair products on his coat, I also use an old favorite infusium #3 leave in treatment. Put the liquid in a spray bottle spritz his hair after shampoo and even before brushing, it takes out all the knots and keeps hair silky. I also use smoothing serum by Lanza, just a drop in your hands and rub on him and the hair is smooth and silky. good luck

Do you have other photos of him? He's old enough to be in full coat. He may have the gene of the coat that never gets there. Even though it's not a cotton coat, it can be very slow growing straight and tangle free. A pleasing coat to pet owners in regards to caring for this coat.

I don't think a pet owner should have to think of wrapping a coat. If they meet the standard, the coat should be there. You can't expect a show quality coat without protecting it. But pets should have nice coats and the ability to grow a beautiful long coat. A respectable breeder will be upfront with the pet person about what type of coat they are getting. This is a really important reason to get a puppy from the right breeder. Many people love a full coat with a bow everyday. Pet homes should be getting puppies that meet the standard, including a nice beautiful blue and tan silk coat.

Yes he is tall. I think the average may be 9.5 inches so you are a full 2inches above that. That maybe part of the problem.

Rubbing on doormats, etc is another part of it. But you have a boy with a beautiful sheen and obviously well cared for coat.

Also I noted in pic his hair over his loins are shorter. You need to either wrap or band those hairs up to protect urine from getting in the coat. The other way is to let the hair on the tip of his penis grow a bit longer, then the urine dribbles down, and not into the loin coat.

In terms of supplements you need to select the best one for you and your dog. You've gotten already some good suggestions.

He could as an earlier poster suggested may just not be predisposed to growing a coat, but do remember a true silk can take a long time to grow long and to fill out.

You might if you wish consider wrapping his coat for six months or so and see what happens. PurePaws has a video on this.

But be forewarned it takes time to learn, and time to do, it truly is a labor of love. Most pet owners don't choose to try for floor length. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't it's just quite time consuming.

Wraps have to be checked every day, butt, moustaches, and topknot changed daily. I am not too swift but, for a full wrap of coat for me it takes at least 1.5 hours, more experienced and or dextrous owners might do in 1/2 that time.

Show dogs are bathed at the minimum weekly and sometimes more.

I was at a show in May and looking at one of my favorite vendor, Natures Farmacy. They had a ton of prople there looking for their wonderful Gro-Hair. I had to ask about it and according to the Havanese people and many handlers this stuff is great! Of course I had to get some, all my guys are in good coat so I hope it will get even better. Just use a pinch twice a day.

I do find that he does get urine on his sides. How long should the hair on his privates be kept?
