I am thinking of putting a little oil on Beamers coat.
The breeder had recommended Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil or the Neutragena Body Oil light, the light sesame formula, which is available at the local drug store.
I have never put oil on him before, but I think it would benefit his coat.
How do you use it? Do I just put some on my hands and massage a little into his coat? Or should I spray some on him with a spray? Do I need to dilute it?

I had thought of getting some lanolin and just putting some on my hands and petting him (I believe it was the lanolin on the hands of the workers in the woolen mills that is supposed to have given the Yorkshire terrier the beautiful coat), but then I seem to recall reading somewhere that lanolin is not good.

I really want Beamer's coat to be kept in tip top condition.

I have heard pros and cons about using oil on the coats. A show person I know told me she was using Olive Oil with Aloe Vera shampoo and conditioner. You can find it at Wal-mart. I have been using it and I really do like the results I am getting. Each dog is different so what works for one might not work for another. I have used the Neutrogena Body Oil in the past but someone told me that it will lighten the coat so I quit using it. I don't know if that is true or not. Hopefully some more knowledgeable folks can give you some advise. Is Beamer a show dog?

Now usually oil is used when you wrap a Yorkies coat, and I don't think you will be wrapping him?

So given the answer is no to the wrapping. If I remember correctly Beamer has a silk coat. So you want a light oil. The plush puppy Seabreeze oil, I've used diluted with water for my Blackies. I only used it once on Razz's coat (also a silk coat), and did not like the feel of it in my hands, or on his coat. Now I used it pure not diluted.

When wrapping I've used the oil in a spray bottle. Now what I use today is Moroccan Oil aka Argon oil.

If you are not wrapping him, here is what I suggest. Use the ISB mink oil in your shampoo a few drops will do. Use Biogroom Silk Conditioner as one of his conditioners. Leave a "fair" amount of conditioner in coat, coat should feel a bit slippery to the touch. Blow dry coat out . Now I think you brush every day. Create a spray mixture, of the mink oil, the Laser Lites silk, Argon/Moroccan oil, and finally Chris Chistensen Ice on Ice. Start with 1 tblsp per each ingredient to 16 oz. of water. Mix really really well. I use a hand mixer to mix up the product. Lightly mist the coat prior to brushing.

Brushing is very important, start always with small sections, and work from tips of coat up to the root. If you get a tangle, ease gently out either with your fingers or use the tip of a rat tail comb.

The Neutrogena oil I only use on my Blackies to coat their hair prior to swimming, and it worked really well for that use. but for a Yorkie coat? Not sure that I'd use it on Razz's silk. It's a bit heavy to my touch for his silk.

the shampoos and conditioners you use are really important for health and lustre. Diet and supplements too very important. to minimize hair breakage, don't let your Beamer rub on the carpet, or the grass.

If you can before he goes out to backyard to do his business, put his hair up in the light weight bands, and if you could get a wrapping jacket that would be grand. Once back in you can take off the jacket if he isn't rubbing on carpet etc.

Just a word of caution. I have been told by more than one experienced show breeder/exhibitor do not OVER Brush the coat.

I use the seabreeze oil. I massage it in my hands then put in coat. A little goes a long way so really massage it in the coat. Too much and they look greasy

No, Beamer isn't a show dog. I bought him as a pet.
But I really want him to look his very best. I have some Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil in the house, but hesitant to use that. I think it is a mineral oil with fragrance added.

No, I don't wrap Beamer's coat.
I brush every day to make sure he not tangled, and use Miracle Coat leave in conditioner when I brush him.
I am not sure what shampoo the lady that grooms him uses, but I bought some 4paws Oatmeal shampoo which she used last time.

I dont wrap either and I use oil. I use it to give shine to the coat

I'm confused by the oil issue, I used to show back in the 80's and show coats were always oiled, now I've been told by people who are showing that it is no longer the usual practise to oil coats and that diluted conditioners are used. Now my human kids have grown up(well sort of!!), I am hoping to start showing again and, of course, will be anxious to use the best products. I wonder if oiling was discontinued because it was found to be harmful or because there are so many more coat products available, there are lots of wonderful organic oils available now and I must admit I'd be tempted to still oil!

Well for wrapping the coat I and my breeders do oil prior to wrapping. I use Moroccan Oil for this, and yes it is organic. But I do make up my own concoction for a grooming spray, and for show days I use Vellus anti-static spray.

There are so many wonderfull shampoos and conditioners out there. On the grooming thread, there is a very long post on conditioners for cotton coats, which contains lots of info on what folks are using.

Most of the other exhibitors on here I think might be at shows this wkend, so you may have to check back in a day or two for more answers.

Someone else recommended this to me as well and they also make an oil that you can use as well - it's called Olive Oil. I have Mickey in the oil now and not sure I like it but we'll see how he looks when I was it out..... Good luck. To me, this is the hardest thing, finding what works best for your dog.....

Thanks everyone-I think it is very much a question of finding what suits your own particular dog-I think when I get my new pup(hopefully early next year:))I will probably try the Moroccan Oil-I also saw in a health store organic Almond oil with Manuka & I think that may be something worth trying. Off to read the other coat threads!

I like Moroccan oil for myself better than I liked it on my dogs although I love the smell. I found it heavy - even the light version.

I also like Walnut Hill's Yorkie Sheen detangler which has a sheen to it as Sarah uses a lovely blend of oils. I love the smell of her products.

My favorite though, is what Teddy's breeder uses and recommends - Biogroom Mink Oil. I spritz them as a finishing spray after baths and the coat stays nice.

If only I could combine all three into one and take all my favorite elements! My dogs arent show dogs either but nevertheless beauty is very important to them - especially Barney.:D

I put a little BioGroom oil or Cream in with the shampoo. It gives it less of a greasy look.
