Top knot question Just a quick question in putting a top knot in or even pigtails for that matter...what is the best way to keep your baby still?? I have 3 month old and I just recently got a few tiny bows and hair ties but cannot for the life of me get him to sit still! Yes I know he's a boy but I got little blue bows as well as a "bone" bow which will look cute with his jersey :) Also, what are the best items to use in doing the hair? Should I get a tiny comb instead of his brush? Any help for a new mommy is much appreciated!!! :D |

At your pup's age, be especially careful not to pull the hair too tight in any kind of hairband or clip. Getting the pup to sit still requires patient training. Teach your pup "watch me." Put the treat in between your eyes and give the command. Give the treat if your dog looks at you. Gradually lengthen the amount of time that you require your pup to look at you to win the reward. Dog exhibitors will often train their dogs to lie down with their heads resting on a cushion. Teach your pup the "down" and "stay" commands and give him a nice little pillow. Talk to your pup in a soothing way and praise him for staying still while you are grooming. Always remain calm, otherwise your pup will get anxious and want to get away. Give him a small treat when you finish. I tied grooming to my dogs' favorite activity: walks. They have to have their hair combed and their topknots straightened before a walk. I use a small comb on the face & head. Some people use a small, soft brush. Whatever you choose, make sure you can safely handle it around your pup and his eyes. |
Great thanks SOO much help! What exactly is a neck pillow? I'm so new at this and I see everyone's pups looking sooo adorable I want to learn to do those styles too! I wonder if there is a step-by-step guide in how to do it properly haha, but I shall practice! Thanks again!! :D |

Here is an example of a topknot pillow: Mighty Mite Dog Gear - Top Knot Pillow You don't have to use that style pillow. Anything that raises the dog's head a bit and gives them a target spot to keep their head would work. |
One example of topknot instructions (most of the instructions you will find are for longer hair): Top Knot Guide As Mary (Mardelin) wrote above: practice, practice, practice. She has years of experience exhibiting Yorkies. I'm a novice pet owner and when I first tried to put Max's hair up, I thought it was hopeless. |
What's a top knot pillow and how is it used? (just curious) |

1 Attachment(s) You can also roll up a towel to use as a topknot pillow. He will probably behave better if you put him up on a grooming table, if you have one. If not, a folded towel on your washer or dryer makes a good makeshift table. Get him used to being groomed with lots of praise and treats. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the time. Don't worry about the bow for now. Let him get used to a topknot with just a band for now. This is my favorite topknot tutorial: Topknots shared by Linda Grimm and Maria Lelinho starring Rocky! Many Thanks! A brush, a rat tail comb (use the end to loosen the topknot) and small (1/4" or 5/16") grooming bands are all you need to start. Band removal scissors are also great for snagging and clipping the band without cutting the hair. |
Ahhh wonderful! Thanks soo much!! :D |
