Nail woes Yes, I am a terrible mommy. I cut Thor's nail so short he bled, and not just a little bit either. I really should have known better, because he was struggling with me, and he only gets antsy when I start to get close to the quick. Here is what threw me: the nail was already quite short. They'd been cut ~2 months ago at the groomers, and I noticed at the time that there was quite a bit of quick showing on all his nails. I thought that maybe his nails had been too long, so they just cut them really short, right through the quick, to get them back on course. Now this one two months later was still quite short, but I didn't see any quick. So I cut a little slice off, Thor freaked out, I restrained him, and gave him a treat. Another little slice off, freak out, restrain, treat. Another one or two times, and suddenly his nail is gushing blood, and I realize that the nail is WAY too short. Why didn't I see the quick until it was too late??? I'm very confused. :( Thor started playing with me a few minutes after The Incident, so I think he has forgiven me, bless his pure little doggie heart. |
have you thought about using dremel to grind his nails instead of cutting them? i took milu to petsmart the other day, and they used the dremel to grind down her nails. it seems safer to do it that way. a groomer had cut milu's nail too short once and it bled a lot, she cut it so short i dont know why she wasnt even paying attention or what? :( you want to make sure you don't make thor dislike getting his nails clipped. otherwise he will start fighting you everytime you try to cut his nails. |
This is what i have learned and it is working for me. I have been told: 1.Just clip the tip until you see a white dot in the center that is the beginning of a quick. 2. If you clip often..weekly..the quick recedes and you can eventually cut nails short without getting the quick Good luck OH and i believe there are some videos on youtube pertaining to this:D |
