Grooming question I was told by the groomers at Petco that we shouldn't cut Marchello's fur until he's one. I just wanted to know what would happen if we did cut it, it's getting really long and he gets a lot of tangles in it even though we brush it every day. |
Harley went to the groomers and had his hair cut at about 16 to 18 weeks. I just waited until he had all his puppy shots before taking him. He's 17 months now and has beautiful hair. |
There are no side effects associated with cutting your pup's hair before age 1. If you want your pup to have a haircut, go for it. :) |
ADSL is nine months and has gone to the grooms about six times so don't know why they would say that. Check out our pictures I have them on there. |
I would have been interested to hear why they thought that. I find they are much easier to take care of once that puppy coat is gone. |
We asked them, but all they said is that it would mess up his puppy fur. I'm looking for a groomer in the area now. When I took him to Petco for the wash and sanitary the shampoo made his fur so dry and course it's just getting back to normal a month later. |
That's weird. Petco in our area offered a special for a puppy trim - the puppy had to be less than 4 months old -- they did a head/face trim, sanitary cut, and feet. I took Cody just before he was 4 months old. After 4 months old, it's the regular price. |
Strange! Run, don't walk frm that groomer |
I had a bad experience the only time I took my dogs to a groomer and it happened to be one of the large chain pet stores. Can you try to find a small local grooming shop that might be more experienced with yorkies or small dogs? |
I'm not sure why they would tell you that. From my own experience, and from what I've read on here, the puppy coat tends to get matted easily and can be very difficult to untangle without pulling and hurting your dog. I got Boo shaved at about 14 weeks, and from there I could maintain his coat with daily brushing. And since we never had the experience of pulling at mats he loves getting brushed now! |
1 Attachment(s) I agree. That puppy coat is nasty. I cut it myself. Copper is 6 months old. I love the way he looks. And the best part is that he is sweet. |

Dharma got her last puppy shot on Tuesday so we're going to make her grooming apt for a few weeks! |
I don't like petco groomers. I took Jackson their to cut his nails then directly to petsmart for a face trim and they had to recut his nails. I'm not a big fan of petsmart either, the groomers are vicious, I won't tell u about what they did to a dog while I was there, but petco has sucked for me. |
That's total bull to wait til he's a year. I am a groomer and we cut tons of yorkies before they are a year old. I gave all of mine their first haircuts before they were one year old. It does nothing to their hair except make it shorter, obviously. If the hair is becoming too long and too much to take care of, cut it. It's much better than the alternative of letting your yorkie get so out of control that he gets matted and then he has to be shaved bald or dematted which is a VERY painful process if you choose the latter. |
