There are some groomers that will do "touch up's" cheap, like $15. for 10 minutes. I keep my crew mostly long, except one I shave, and 3 have modified (Diaper) cuts. I haven't taken them yet for the touch up, but I figure they can do their feet, and under their tails in 10 min. I do the bath, brush and blow dry anyway. Just a thought. The one I shave, looks better every time! lol |
Scissors for grooming Hi, I have been grooming SaraJane for a couple years now. I just have short scissors that I got from Pet Edge. What size of scissors do you use? I am thinking that my scissors are too short. I have one HECK of a time with her face, especially under her chin to neck, and her legs! I remember the groomer used a longer pair and thought it might be easier if I used longer ones? Do you mind sharing with me the length and brand that you use? Thank you very much. :) Sara is only 3 3/4 pounds. Quote:

I've always groomed my yorkies myself. At the start is was just trial & error as many above me have said. Just remember the golden rule of all haircuts...human or doggie ...less is more... you can always cut more off later...but you can't glue is back on :p |

OK. So you do have a pair that is longer. I'll have to think about this. Thanks again. :-) |
I have both curved and straight scissors from Heritage I think and from Tweezerman that are about 8 and 10 inches long. It's very hard to do the body with short scissors and the good thing about Tweezerman is that even though they are made for human hair, they resharpen for free. Just mail them to the address on every package. I have about 4 pairs of them I use for the doggies and me and hubby, too. then get a pair of the ball tipped scissors from the same company like you would use to trim a man's nose and ear hairs. I use those to trim the hair close to the eyes and around the ears. I know it sounds expensive but I paid between $60 and $125.00 per pair for my scissors. It's worth it in the long run because the cheap ones are not even worth re-sharpening and they won't cut hair but once or twice. When I trim the ears edges and the penis I grip the edge of the ear or penis with my fingers where only the hair is sticking out and then trim right at my fingers. That way you can't cut any flesh but your own. My grandmother was a beautician and taught me how to do that so you don't cut someones ear. The hair close to the eyes scares me the worst because there is nothing you can do. I always use the ball tip scissors and come from the top down. That way you may stick them in the top of the nose if they jerk but you aren't nearly as likely to stick them in the eye. It always scares me though. |
Scissors for grooming Thank you. I will take a look at both those websites. How big is your dog? Sara Jane is just 3 3/4 pounds so her legs aren't very long. I find it difficult to do much below her back. |
I have never cut Minnie's hair but if I ever do I will be watching alot of tutorial videos online. She is 7 1/2 months old and has never even stepped her little paws in a grooming place for a cut or to get bathed. I do all the bathing and everything myself. But right now at this point I am not interested in cutting her hair. I love her just the way she is. |
