to shave or not to shave? 4 Attachment(s) i have a 10 week old yorkie/long hair chahuahua mix. im allergic to long hair. we have a long hair cat which we shaves and dthat solved my allergy problem until we got bailey 2 weeks ago. my allergic have flared up again since bailey follows me around all the time. so my question is should i shave his body (long coat and cotton fur) or just continue to take my allergy pills daily? i have included some pictures so you can see his fur. ps- will his fur change color like a yorkie or stay black and tan? Hi and welcome to YT! Unfortunately with a mixed breed dog you can never tell if it will bother your allergies. You can try shaving him down but its no guarantee it will help. Also frequent bathing, conditioning, and brushing may help. plus an air purifier for your home to suck up the pet dander |

Good Post Also try to make sure he doesn't sleep on the bed with you that should help as well. My groomer has allergies to dogs, so she wears a mask when grooming, she says it helps. |
What a cutie! The reason why yorkies are considered a better choice for allergy sufferers is that they don't shed, they only have one hair follicle, not the double hair follicles like most breeds. The undercoat is what most breeds lose, and you will find it all over your house making clean up tougher. The dander is a sticky substance like peanut butter, which sticks to the hair, and all dogs have it even yorkies, but since yorkies aren't constantly shedding the dander doesn't go everywhere. Bathing and brushing can keep it in check. Most people are allergic to the dander not the hair. If I were you, I stay on the pills. |
What a lil cutie you got there, :D Good luck with your decision |

his back still looks really brown. i honestly don't think he's going to have a yorkie coat so you will still be allergic to him. however its still really early to tell. He's still young and his coat may still change. it doesn't look like a normal yorkie puppy after a shave down though. |
Even if he was born bald, it would not guarantee you against allergies because that problem comes from the skin, not the coat. Even those hairless cats can and do trigger allergies. My husband is deathly allergic to cats, and even when we had a Sphinx in the house, my husband suffered. The coat in all dogs even if long, protect them from heat and cold. I wouldn't have shaved him. I saw a product on the market that you can rub into them then brush and it cuts down on the fine particles that come from the skin. You may have to just use a cat mitt to rub him down each day now until his coat grows back. Maybe even have someonw else do the brushing for you. |
yes my allergies are much better (from him atleast, now the cat is starting to bother me.lol) his fur has started to grow in and i make sure to keep him clean and warm. he does have some clothes if he gets cold ( i want to buy more but they seem so expesnive for something so small but worth it) yes i know he doesnt look like a regular yorkie. he is half yorkie half long hair chihuahua. nobody has any idea what he will look like as an adult and his breeder isnt getting back to me ( i asked for pictures of previous puppies) on saturday bailey went to the vet (14 weeks) and he is 3.8 lbs. when we got him at 8 weeks he was 1.2lb. lol the thing i have defintally noticed is his colors have changed since we first got him |
