Is it normal .... Kasha is finally allowing me to brush her without attacking me. But I'm noticing that as I brush out the absurd amount of mats, the brush is COVERED in them! I wind up with a big bad furball of mats & hair at the end. Is this normal? ** I'm spraying her with conditioner(Aveda) before brushing. |
Yes it is normal. Yorkies have hair like humans..it doesn't shed and needs to be brushed. It is just like your hairbrush if you don't brush it on a daily basis..A lot of yorkies hate having their hair brushed so make sure the brush is not to rough on their skin, take your time and have little treats ready. |
When it is time to groom I like to put these guys up. I set up a little grooming area on top of my dryer with a bath towel so they don't slide around. When they were puppies I would keep treats handy and treat and praise while I brushed. If you brush with one hand and pet with the other this will also help but remember to always be sure she does not try to get away from you and jump down. If it worries you to put her that high up you can also use the top of a coffee table or end table. Make sure you have all of your supplies together, it makes it much easier. :) |
awesome thanks guys! just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to make her bald by brushing! |
What kind of brush are you using? That makes a difference too. I was using a regular metal tooth comb before and it was breaking a lot of the hairs. Basically breaking the mats out, instead of untangling them. Now I use a Madan brush from mimimomo and for when I get to a mat I use one of those rotating metal tooth combs, helps to get out the mat without tearing out the hair. |
I use a pin brush without the little ball things on the end. After brushed out I use the boar hair side to make him shiny :) I don't think he's ever had a mat, his hair doesn't really tangle easily. But a metal greyhound comb will help break up the mats to make them easier to brush out. |
