Question for those who groom their yorkies themselves... I have been back and forth about cutting Louis' hair. I think that I am going to cut it for the summer. I would like to do it myself, and I was just wondering what kind of clippers I should use. Also, what size balde do you use, and how do you cut the hair on the face? Thanks! |
Hi! Well, I'd say it all depends on how long your dog's hair is, how short you want to make it, and what kind of hair he has. :D My Max has a modified coat not silky but not cotton/soft coated. I don't use clippers on him - only scissors. His hair is thin and light in color so I leave it in a longer style to flatter him. My Mia has a soft cotton coat and I do use a clipper and scissors on her. She has a thick dark coat so I leave her's fairly short. I use a small peanut clipper to trim the tips of their ears and their private area. I use scissors for everything else. Oh, the clippers I use on Mia is a Wahl set that I got at WalMart that has combs included with it. I don't change the blades like some do. I use a larger comb to start with and go smaller if that doesn't take off enough hair. I never clip down to the skin so I can't tell you what size to use for that. I always leave at least an inch on Mia's body. I think the face takes me the longest. Again, I use scissors. It's a lot of trial and error. I bought a DVD about grooming Yorkies that actually listed all the things you need and showed 3 cuts you can do on a Yorkie. It helped alot but I still do mine different. How about some pictures of your Louis so that we can see what you're wanting to do? |

Thanks for the links! |
When I first groomed myself I followed the groomer's line from his last grooming. It's easy that way and until you get comfortable, which takes lot's of time:p he'll look good. If you want him to be shorter, down the road you'll have the confidence to do it. I use Oster Golden clipper's. #7 for his short back and # 10 for underbelly, butt area. I scissor his face and ears and use the Wahl moustache trimmer for his pads. Do alittle at a time. You'll see, you will do great. |
I just shaved mine down for the summer and used a 1/16th comb on a #40 blade. I was using a 1 1/4" comb over the winter with their long coats. I use scissors on the faces, legs and butt area. I also followed the groomers lines on Hot Rod at first and then just started experimenting a little. sometimes it didn't quite work out like I wanted, but the good thing is that the hair does grow back. I got the dvd that was mentioned above and must have watched it 20x before getting up the courage to do it. lol It's been over a year that I've grooming my , so there is hope! Good luck! |

Check out this thread if you want ideas for a short summer cut. Nancy1999's Joey is somewhat of a leader of this trend that is really cute: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...tell-joey.html I'm going to try this on my girls when they grow out a bit more. |
I use Andis clippers, don't care for Oster's. For cotton coats I recommend a #4F or #5F if you don't want them completely shaved which is what the #7F or #10 will give you. I don't like using guard combs on silky coated Yorkies because it leaves their hair choppy. Looks like they lost a fight with a lawn mower! :) |
For those of you that have a grooming video... do you recommend the one you have? |
