Finally Going to Order Grooming Supplies. Help With Combs! Ok, so after like 6 months of debate I am going to order my supplies this week! Here is what I am getting: 1. Andis UltraEdge 2-Speed Clippers in silver. I decided on these in case I need to use them on dogs I pet sit and so they last longer. 2. Fromm Premier III Series Curved Shears 6 1/2". I have heard a lot of good things about these on this forum. My issue is the combs... I really am lost here. I did a search on the forum and didn't get any results that answered my question. I want him to be short. From his skin it is probably 3/4" to 1". But it lays flat on his back so there is no way a 3/4" comb or even 1" comb is going to get him that short... is there? If I go backwards maybe. But I don't know which way I am going to go! Please help. My options for the comb sizes are: Andis Small Comb Set contains 9 sizes (1/16", 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", and 9/16"). Andis Large Comb Set contains 8 sizes (5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 15/16", 1", 1 1/4"). Please help! Thanks. |
Bump:) |
Thank you :). I was going to order yesterday but then realized I need someone to make sure I am not forgetting anything or getting the wrong thing for what I want! |
I wish I could help you but I only do the ears...hopefully someone who is a groomer can help.:) |
If you want him short, you'll want to use a blade. 7F will leave 1/4" of hair on the body. 4F 3/4" 30F w/1" comb will leave 1" of hair. You can also use a 10 or 40 under the comb. I recommend getting this clipper set, it comes w/everything you need. PetEdge: Andis Easy Clip Clipper Kit The Fromm shears are great. |
I'm pretty set on getting those clippers since I wanted to spend the extra for higher quality ones. I feel like a 1" comb will leave his hair shorter than 1 inch because it is so flat on his back... which is why I didn't know what set of combs to get. Correct me if I'm wrong I've never groomed a dog before.. |
A 1" comb (E) will leave one inch of hair on the body & F is 1 & 1/4".PetEdge: Andis Universal Snap-On Large Clipper Combs You can get the combs separately if you don't want to get the whole set...you'll probably not use most of them. |
Oh ok... so would you suggest getting maybe 3/4" and 1" and then maybe 1/2" because I still have a problem with the hair being flat... because my groomer told me this. She used to be really good but then had a baby (and took many months off) and his hair varies from 1/2" to 1.5" due to his last hair cut.. you can't really tell since its flat on his back though. If the comb is 1" and I run it over his fur it will not cut anything, Or is the 1" just a measurement of how long it will leave it, the comb itself doesn't actually make the blade 1" from the skin? Do I even make any sense?? Ugh this is so frustrating. I need to go to grooming school to understand this.. |
Sorry, I think I misunderstood. I think you're wanting him short, right? You're saying a 1" comb will not do much, esp bc his hair is silky & lays flat. A 4FC blade leaves 3/4" of hair & I think it's not too short & you won't need combs. Or you can get the small comb set & start w/the biggest comb, working your way down to shorter combs to get the desired length. Hope that helps. |
If your furbaby has flat hear it is better to use blade vs. comb. If you use a comb you will end up having to do a backward cut to get it even |
Holly has silky hair and so do many of my customers yorkies and I found that blade is better. |
Ok, so would this blade work the best you think? Without any combs. PetEdge: Andis UltraEdge Clipper Blade Size 4FC |
Yup:) |
Great, finally placed my order. $181 later... haha. Well, I hope it will be worth it in the long run. Finally. I had planned on grooming him myself when I first got him, 1 1/2 years ago.. :) |
I just wanted to update that my order came. In 3 days!!! I just waited 3 and a half weeks for his new crate bed so I was ecstatic when the clippers came in such a short time. +1 for PetEdge. I used the clippers and boy are they great. Unlike the reviews say they are very quiet. Thanks to mimimomo I got the 4FC blade and it cuts him the perfect length, around 3/4". The curved shears are great. I fixed up a lot of what my groomer did and he looks a lot better. I didn't fix up his face yet though. I think it is because my groomer is in a rush, while I only have one dog to concentrate on (and, I know what I want lol). They are much easier than regular scissors you have around the house :P. I want to encourage those who are considering grooming themselves to try it. I have been able to fix up Scruffs the way I like him and I will no longer have to spend so much money every few months. I am happy with my purchase and thank you for all the help on this forum :). I especially appreciate mimimomo for being so helpful even though you are a groomer yourself and I didn't go to grooming school. I wish others on this forum were like you! |
