How do you get out small knots?? matted hair?? Trixie still has puppy hair and hasn't been to the groomer yet (soon though). I just noticed today that she has a small sized clump of hair stuck together...matted hair I guess. How do I unmatt it without causing her pain. The brush I have has a soft side and a pin side with little balls at the end. What is your suggestion. Thanks. :animal-pa |
contact mimimomo (member here) and order one of her Madan brushes. DO NOT use a brush with ball tips.. it will tear out the hair. Use a good brush and some spray on conditioner and gently work the mat out starting at the ends and working toiwards the body |

I find that a steel comb works the best on matts... just slowly working through it and pulling it apart. |
Thanks. I will try and find mimimomo and order the combs/brushes.:animal-pa |
Anyone with long coated dogs should always have a slicker brush to get the knots out. ;) (get a small one used for cats) Also need a pen brush, but not with the little balls at the tips unless they are molded and not just attached. The attached type will tear the hair. |
The best brush going is the wooden bristle brush by Chris Christenson. Hands down the best money I've spent. Pin Brushes And also get a buttercomb. These are available from CC also but you can find them locally for much less. Slicker brushes aren't recommended for single coated dogs nor are pin brushes with "balls" on the ends of the bristles |

I own the CC pin brushes also. Slicker brushes tore the heck out of my Yorkie's hair. That went straight into the garbage. |
Get it wet, slowly comb through--use your fingers to prevent pulling the skin....slow wins! |
Ok I'm confused ... my groomer (who has yorkies herself) told me to use the slicker brush and NOT the pin brush. Kasha hates both and SCREAMS bloody murder when I try and brush her. What to do? |
I'm such a bad mommy, I am too lazy when it comes to mats and I normally end up cutting them....DONT do this (I am a bad influence lol). However, using a conditioner and a steel comb works for me (so does Johnsons No More Tangles). I just spray and wait a few seconds then comb. If it doesn't loosen it then I spray some more and work slow. Roxy's patience is very short so we dont try to comb them out for too long. That is why she got shaved when she was a pup.....she would not let me comb her at all!!! Now she is great (as long as I dont take too long) |

hm interesting. I hate split ends but I haven't been able to hold her still long enough to see a difference. Any tips on that? (I've had 2 super stubborn Scottish Terriers for the past 15 years but they are big enough to old btwn your knees when you brush.) :aimeeyork |

I also have one of the Brass Fusion pin brushes. I highly recommend the wooden pin brush. really, bchgirl is right. It's costs a good penny but it is the BEST investment you'll make for your grooming. |

Invest in Vellus Satin cream www.vellus.com - they have a sampler kit for about $20 you can order. This cream is a wonder for the weblike mats. Apply it to weblike mat. Use your fingers to spread web apart. Then from the tips of the hair working towards the body you could use your wooden pin brush. Now for a "knot" get any rat tailed comb. begin to use the tip of rattail to gently lift out strand by strand the hair that is in a knot. |

A slicker brush has it's place. If used properly, many yorkies do well with it. Not a tool for a show dog or most pet homes. But there's a place for it. |
whats the best shampoo for yorkies?? my poor juicy has a bunch of knots and wont let me comb her hair :[ |
believe this or not... I use a product by Absorbine, called "Show Sheen". Its actually made for horses, however it cuts down on grooming time in a big way !!!! I have an entire case of grooming tools I use.... after owning and raising yorkshire Terrorists for over 35 years. My experience and opinion is.....slow and steady wins the race....remember they are very intelligent little creatures and remember being "hair pulled" just one. |
My groomer also suggested for bad tangles to cut through the mat with thinning scissors. This will break up the tangle without loosing too much hair. Just be careful if the mat is close to the skin. |
ok thank u both so much!<3 :] im gonna go to petco today and buy the stuff i need to take the knots off! :] thanx again. |
I use a Chris Christensen brush and combs as well, but also recommended the Madan as a more cost effective alternative for "pet" owners. Of course if money is not a problem, then by all means, get the very best! But then again, I know show exhibitors who use Madan. The point here is to always use some type of spray on conditioner and slowly work thru the mat to break it up. |
Ice on Ice spray by CC helps with mats..... and it is a "slowly but surely" process!! ..... Also you may consider Biolage Detangling condidtioner. I use it on my 3 and it works wonders on long hair. Shelby has a cottony coat and can get knotted if we miss a day of grooming (try not to let let happen, but once in a blue moon, it does :( ) Make sure that you stay away from the face with the Biolage.... we use it on body only!!! We use conditioner also.... but nothing works like the detangler for mats & knots! As far as brushes go, we use CC pin brushes and butter combs, but I am going to be ordering a Madan brush to see how I like them...... have heard good things about them, but can't say until I try one. ;) Good Luck! |
this has been very a very interesting thread. Peyton is very good about letting me brush her, she just sits there so patiently, such a good girl. so, i just take my time and get out all the mats. i wasnt feeling well for the past couple weeks, i had a bad cold , so i hadnt brushed her much. then yesterday i finally brushed her good, it took along time but i did get out all the mats. i'm new to yorkies, so never really had to brush a dog like this before. i didnt know that you should never bush a dog with dry hair... did i read that right. i will have to get some of that leave on conditioner |
One of Andy's and mine daily rituals is I sit on the floor with we watch tv. He gets a full body massage then a brushing. Lucky for him/me we haven't had a matting knot problem yet . |
During that puppy to adult coat phase I've had good luck with Pet Head's Furball Detangling Spray and a simple comb. Spreading out that weblike knot makes it fairly simple to get out. I rarely have those anymore since I started doing his final comb using a flea comb. Those teeth are so close together that it catches any snarls way before they have a chance to turn into anything. Also very handy for combing his nose as the small size is perfect for facial grooming |
