Ear cleaning nightmare I went to the vet today to have Samy sprayed so he does not catch any ticks from the grass. While we were there I decided to ask the vet to do a few more things, one of which was clean Samy's ears and pluck the hair inside. I have never sweat so much... at first Samy was calm when the vet started plucking the hairs but eventually started screaming and twisting.. He really seemed in so much pain but in other YT threads I read that it does not hurt??? The vet said that it hurts him... but now Samy's ears are super clean.. he seemed to have a lot of hair too, is that how it is? Were your babies in pain the first time you plucked their ear hair? Poor Samy wanted to hide himself in my arms.. It was soo sad!!!! I do not think I will ever do this to him if it is not necessary!!!! |
Ouch.....I'm sorry your Samy had such a painful time at the vets...poor baby! I know there are some that will tell you it must be done, they do it, and it doesn't hurt. But, I have never plucked the hair out my yorkies ears and neither one have ever had a problem with ears getting infected, ear mites or even ear scratching. Ruby doesn't have much ear hair, but Reno does. I do use an ear cleaner on them both on bath days. I make sure to blow dry them and always make certain their ears are dried. I use the blow dryer (holding about 6-8" away) on a cool setting to dry inside the ears. |
Thanks for replying.. I am still sweating from this experience.. perhaps it was necessary to do it as he was dirty all around when I got him and his ears did need cleaning but I do not think I will ever do it again.. I will keep him clean as much as possible and clean his ears with wipes and cream .. poor Samy!!!! |

Thanks :) I may do it too if Samy does not freak me out every time or just take him to the vet to be done as i do not want him to be in pain .. we will see... i guess some dogs get infections and some dont... |

Ya know how squeamish we all were as women when we first plucked our eyebrows? It hurt so bad.....I said I would grow eyebrow hair so long I could braid it before I'd go through that again. I am the biggest wimp about pain on the planet. Well, vanity overtook me and I kept on doing it.....each time, less discomfort. Now I don't think any more of it than brushing my teeth. It's just conditioning. Same for the babies, but I still don't do it myself. I take them to the groomer and it's over in a second. They could do it in their sleep. I will gladly pay $5 bucks, any day of the week. Then just a squirt of cleaner and a cotton ball on bath day and we are set. These breeders have taught me so much (thank you Mardelin) and attending to ear hygiene is one of them. Necessary and great preventive medicine. |

Teddi is 3.5 years old and she hasn't been to the groomers in 2 years and I've never plucked her ears but they seem fine. I had a poodle that used to get ear infections so I know what it smells like so I am constantly smelling her ears but I don't think anything is wrong with them because there is no scent at all. I'm going to look tonight and if I see a lot of hair but I don't think she has a lot (I'm not sure I'll be able to see inside cuz her ears are small). |
I do pet grooming and the best thing to do is pluck the hair out because it prevents lots of problems and start at 8 wks then every 6 wks after to get them familiar to the cleaning. I recommend using ear powder it crystallizes the hair and makes it easier and pain free. It is normal for yorkies to act this way since their ears are very small. |
Thank you.. I feel much better now knowing that he will get used to it and eventually not mind it especially that it is important the hairs to be plucked. |
My little baby boy Gizmo was only six months when the vet cleaned his ears but he had to give him local anesthesia to clean his ears it was so expensive. |
Wow never heard of someone using anesthesia for ear cleaning. Maybe just something to calm him down? |
