Grooming: Do It Yourself or Take Somewhere I am looking for a new groomer and wondering who ya'll use here in Louisville, KY~? Is there anyone whom specifically does Yorkies here~? Who can you all tell me to stay away from that you've had a bad experience with~? I am on my 3rd groomer and am not happy and wanting to change. Thanks. |
You asked if you should do it yourself. We've had lots of posts of photos from people who have done it themselves. While very funny, and it's almost impossible to make a Yorkie not cute, I wouldn't suggest it unless you know what you are doing. If you can't get a recommendation from a friend, I would just go to some groomers and talk to them. You can often get a gut feeling for whether they are good or not, and while you are there take a look around. You will often see photos of dogs and see dogs that have just been groomed. Also, keep in mind there are about a zillion ways to cut a Yorkie. My groomer often has three or four floating around the shop, and each is different, from long hair touching the floor to puppy cuts. |
If you want to groom your self there are all kinds of videos out there plus there is a sticky in the grooming part of YT. I do my own as many of us do because of all the horror stories we have heard, |
They will forgive you if you mess up. After a few negative groomer experiences I decided to groom myself. I am getting better....we'll just leave it at that:D |

I've always have had good experiences with the groomers I have gone to. I don't want to do it myself since he doesn't stay still enough for me. I don't want to take a chance to hurt him where the hair grows near his eyes. I plan to try a new place soon. |
Here is a video how to cut the hair. But my dog won't stay this still |
We use a groomer. Fortunately, I have a good one. I have toenail-cutting phobia - so I really have no choice. :) |
That was an intense video. After watching it, it made me glad I was getting a boy. Don't think I'll mess with the bow thing much! |
I've trimmed mine up some and shaved her nose. But I too have the toe-nail phobia. I'd rather her hate the groomer than me. lol And I don't want to hurt her. |

That was an insane video of someone making a topknot for 10 minutes and when he was finished it was flopping in the poor dogs face! He has at least 10 bottle of spray to make it too and it still didn't stay in place  |
I didn't realize that there is more than one video of dog grooming on "You Tube". That video really was for show dogs and how they do their top knot. Here is numerous of videos of how to groom a dog and you can choose which one you'd like to see. I watched some of them and each one is different. YouTube - how to groom a yorkshire terrier |

I just trim them up and have the vet trim their nails. |
I thought I would try it myself and even studied up on it on the internet watching how to videos and then when I got Nigel down to try it he would not sit still and thought I was playing with him and kept trying to bite my comb and I finally said this isn't going to work...I gave up!:aimeeyork:animal36:animal-pa |
I now groom both yorkie and SHih tzu pup myself. Actually my Yorkie , Suzi is a lot easoer to groom then my Tzu . Maybe it is because she is younger then Suzi , I do not know. I am no expert , but, my father gave me a grooming table which I love . I also have cippers and blow dryer. I use a conditioning spray after their bathed , the blow their hair . I just groomed miely my tzu yesterday. She was pretty good too. Keeping up with the grooming and doing it yourself creates a closer bond between u and your dog, that is what I think. I had to shave down Suzi a few nonths ago , and did an ideal job on her, it was not easy because she was matted due to my niece bathing her and not keeping up with the grooming when I was hospitalized. I enoy placing pony tails or top knots on the hair, but the top knots can be tricky with a dog who won't hold still. I am so proud of myself for doing the grooming myself. It saves the stress of being and going to a groomer, in a cage, and the car ride, + the amount of money spent. It is rather fun to groom them yourself, especially if u have more then one high end , dog that requires lots of grooming. |
I just do it myself and consider it a bonding experience. Kaji is a wiggle worm sometimes but not when it comes to grooming. It could be because he's not a pup, he's just so calm! The first time I was so scared of even touching him and I think he knew since he squirmed a lot. I keep him nice and short so I do cut his hair once every 6 weeks or 4 weeks. He sleeps now! He will lay on the newspaper (to catch all the hair :D) and sleeps while I clip his body hair away, he doesn't flinch or notice the clippers anymore. I'm not to confident with the face since I do leave it longer but I'm learning. I just go real slow and treat him for his patience. |
