Ralphie has matted hair..HELP..! ok so he's turning one tomorrow so i decided that we need to take him to the groomers to get all cute looking (not that he isn't) but they told us that he had matted hair and it would be impossible to brush out. my only solution would be to either go home and brush him out or have them shave it off..i dont want his hair all gone..he would look like a rat. so i went and bought some detangler shampoo looking stuff and it works kind of but his hair isnt nice and smooth. so i am wondering if theres another way i can go about this, but when i first got him his hair was all nappy like that and he was only 2 months so im thinking that he may have some sort of skin problem or hair problem. but i have no idea all i know is i dont want to cut it all off. when i first went to get him brushed out the groomers were able to do it..but i need help or some advice.. |
It is very difficult to get the mats out and can be painful for the dog... you may want to consider having him shaved down and starting over. He will be cute either way and the upkeep will be easier if you start fresh. If that is not an option, use a detangler spray and move slowly through him holding your finger between the knot and his skin and using a slicker brush on the mat. Good LucK! |
I believe it was here that someone told me to use cornstarch(dry)....just sprinkle it on the mats and work your fingers through....hope something helps!! |

Hi & Welcome to YT!! I have to agree also...I had a similar problem with my girl and decided for HER sake to go ahead and have her shaved. It's been almost 6 months now and her coat is beautiful, IMO. Grooming is much more enjoyable for the both of us now too. I know it's tough, but it would probably be best for him. Here's a pic of my baby girl right after she was shaved....to say I was shocked would be an understatement....I won't lie, it was a whack job & she did look silly for a while, but well worth it in the end. :D You can see a recent photo of her in my avatar. |
