Anxiety problem I think- Need help :aimeeyorkHarley is 15 months old. I am home with him all day. Every since we have had him he has gone crazy when we leave him. We put him in our bathroom with his toys, food and bed. (the room is good size) Some how he knows when we are getting ready to leave. He starts shaking, cowering, and tries to hide from us. When we pick him up to put him in the bathroom he barks growls and bites at us the whole way to the bathroom because he knows what is happening. What can we do to make this experience easier for him? I can't always take him everywhere I go. I have tried treating him before I put him in there and tried to assure him it was ok, but nothing helps. He acts like a Tasmanian devil!!!! I was going to suggest the same thing...perhaps closing the bathroom door and confining him is what is causing the anxiety. Maybe you could try gating him into a room and see if that helps. It may also help to spend some time with him each day in that room so that it is not "strange" for him to get comfortable there. Good luck :animal-pa |
No unfortunatly my doorways are too wide for baby gates to enclose him in kitchen, or grate room. He still is too mischevious to give him full rein of the house. I have never had to use an xpen because I have always been here to take him out. He never pottyes in the bathroom when he is in there he waits till I get home and goes straight to the door to go out. I just don;t know what to do about how upset he gets when I leave him. |

I would try and leave him for short periods of time so he will get used to you leaving. When I say short periods, I mean like for 30 seconds, 1 minute. Just get him used to you going out and coming back in. While dogs have no concept in time, this will at least help alleviate his anxiety of you coming back. This helped mine tremendously as when I have come back into the room, they were off on the other side of the room playing with each other and then came running around the sofa again or they will just look up at me and wait for me to leave again. We have an expen for ours, I don't know if this helps or not but we have it in the room that we spend all of our time. can you gate off part of the room that you are always in so at least he will have some familiarity when you leave? I have also read on here that someone has it so their dog can look out the window when they are gone. This helped them. Good luck. |
