When did your yorkie first visit the groomer/have a trim? Hedley is between 4 and 5 months old. His puppy coat is starting to mat although I do brush him every evening. I find a pin brush the best, but also use a natural bristle brush to get a shine, I found he didnt tolerate the slicker. I just do small amounts each evening and keep giving him treats because he isnt keen really. He has had a top knot in today but it came out really quickly. I also tried a hair clip. I am wondering if its time to visit the grooming parlour? Or should I wait a bit longer? |
Jackson was 4 1/2 months old. He needed it BAD... his puppy coat was a mess. |
laci was about 4 months too , she has a horrible puppy coat.. |
Daisy was almost 6 months old when I attempted to give her that first haircut; her body was fluffy & pretty, but her face was really unruly! She tolerated the electric clipper, but when it came to doing the scissor cut on her face.......demon dog! Barking, growling, and biting, oh my! It really looked terrible, so I finally gave up. I waited for her body hair to double in length because I had cut it really short, then she went to the professional groomer. I can tell she had a few problems with Daisy's head also, because her ears are less than perfect. Daisy just won't hold still! I decided to keep her hair short while she is still blowing that puppy coat and changing hair color, although the texture isn't tangly at all. She is definitely a wash and go dog, now! |
Gracie was about 4 months. She had very little trimmed though. We just wanted her to get used to going to the groomers-the noises, etc. She goes now about every couple of months just for a little trim-she gets her ears tipped, her nails clipped and her bottom cleaned up. We are letting her grow her coat out. We are very lucky. I brush them morning and evening and she just doesn't mat. Just to add I think that Bristol has a much thicker coat and I can tell that she will likely mat much easier. We are getting her used to brushing now-in the morning we put her hair up and she gets brushed and inthe evening we take her itty bitty top knot out and she get brushed. The first couple of times she didn't care for it but now she doesn't mind at all. :) |
thats a good age to start getting them used to grooming. |
Piper was 4 months old when she got her first grooming. Since then she has been going every 8 weeks. When I pick her up I get her next appointment. I brush her daily, bathe her every 2 weeks, and she stays nice looking in between grooming appointments. |
I feel a bit nervous about taking him to be honest. I have found a local groomer who has good reviews and uses kind methods only. But I dont want to upset him by leaving him there, I wonder if he might be traumatised by the experience. Silly I know. I havent found anywhere that has been personally recommended as I have only just moved to this town. I have also held back because of the weather. Its really cold here at the moment we have freezing conditions and a lot of snow. I have ordered him a fleece jumper and might wait until that comes, so if he's cold I have something to put him on. He has a coat but the jumper has sleeves in and a chest so it will be warmer. |
Did you visit the groomer you found? If you go there and your not comfortable for some reason then don't get him groomed...but chances are...there will be other dogs there and he will be excited to go meet them. :) When I used to get my Belle groomed, she was ecstatic to go. To good by's for this fur-baby momma when i dropped her off. :) |

That timeline for grooming looks like it will work well for us as we will most likely keep the puppy cut. |
