Zoeys Coat OK I'm starting to get stressed out about Zoeys hair......I can not keep it detangled. I brush her every evening. Shes getting bathed once to twice a week. She just has matts and tangles any advice? |
I am sure that other, more experienced voices will be here soon - but just wanted to share my experience with Zoey. She too would get matted but I found that: First, a good Madan brush is key and I keep up with the nightly brushing. Second, I use a few different products but my primary lifesaver is my personal WEN hair product. I use it after I shampoo her and leave it in. It makes a tremendous difference for us!! Lastly, I will use cornstarch if she gets a mat that I am unable to release and I attack it right away so it does not get worse. Hope you find something that helps! |
I use a spray leave-on conditioner as I brush every evening or morning. |
Have you considered cutting off her puppy hair, I had a similar problem with Laci it was very frustrating and she is honestly not the type of dog to sit there and let me groom her for hours , nor did I want to!! Her puppy coat was really hard to manage, she always looked like a rag bag.. not even 5 minutes after I brushed her she would roll on the floor or roll outside on the dirt. It was so hard to manage so I shaved off her puppy coat , and have kept it that way.. There are some really really cute hair cuts on this site!! should you always cut off the puppy coat? I was trying to let it grow to a long coat. But im wondering if you i should cut off the puppy coat and then let it grow? |
My Hugo prior to his first hair cut was a knotted matted mess! I brushed his hair every single day to constantly remove the mats! However, once I got rid of his "baby" hair, his hair became more manageable. I (shhh...dont tell everyone) sometimes skip brushim him some days, and his hair is not matted or knotted. Now dont ask me what type of coat he has cuz I am getting very confused iwth all the "various" coat types. |
well im starting to think that im gonna have to cut her puppy coat off. Because the matts are just getting worse. I sat for an hour last night trying to get them all out and some i just cut out bc i didnt wanna hurt her. |
It looks like she may have a SILKY coat which should be easier to care for when her puppy hair is gone.. I tried to grow Lacis hair out one time too, but instead of growing nice and long it grew outwards...the coat that is comming in now is a pretty silvery color and seems a little softer.. Im going to try and let it grow some to see what it looks like.. her hair does grow really really fast! If you do decide to shave it off, Make sure you tell the groomer ONLY the body... I would leave her facial hair and legs because they are so fluffy and cute.. I think the golden hair tends to be softer and easier to manage.. JMO;) I would also STRESSSS LEAVE THE TOP KNOT!! |
You're most likely dealing with puppy mats. They are frustrating and a stage you just have to get through, if you're growing out her coat. Combing out several times a day will help. Also, if you have her wearing clothes, that will only make the mats worse. So, you might want to limit the time she wears clothes. You can try silk/satin lined garments that also helps somewhat with matting. You might consider keeping her saddle area shaved down if you're going to keep her in clothing. With her leg and tail hair grown out and clothes on, you can't really tell they are shaved down. The cornstarch does work on mats, tangles, but puppy mats are different than a mat full grown dogs get. And, my experience was the cornstarch isn't as effective on the puppy type mats. It works, but there will be so many puppy mats, it still takes time to comb them out. |
Bentley matts like that. It is three times as bad if I let him wear clothes. I have pretty much stopped clothes with him unless it is just for a short period of time. |
wow thank you so much i feel so much better about the decision to cut her hair. Im most def. gonna leave her facial hair and tail and legs though. I love her fluffy feet =] |
