Question about coconut oil Ok, per other's suggestions I bought some of the extra virgin coconut oil to put on my babies' coats. The first time I used it, I put WAY to much and they were extremely oily looking so I had to give them another bath the next day. It made their coats very soft and shiny after washing it off though and Bentley's crazy coat was soooo shiny. I gave them a bath today and used it and just used very little but they still look oily looking. Is this normal?? Thanks! |
Maybe just use it as a hot oil treatment. What works really well is adding vegetable glycerine to your regular conditioner. ;) |
I've heard of adding coconut oil to their food to help their coats, but this is the first of heard of putting it on their coats... |
Well I just used the coconut oil on half of Razz's coat when I wrapped him up and olive oil on the other. I'll will wash him 2 morrow and let you know how it turned out. What I'm thinking of doing is adding the melted coconut oil to his regular conditioner and see how that works out. |
Add a bit to his food its really good for them and they love it my dogs love that stuff and it gives them pretty shinny hair. i do use it as a hot oil treatment when I giving them a bath. just use it when your going to give them a bath. put it on let it sit for awhile till your ready to give them a bath and wash it off. But the best benefit is if you let them eat it. |
I use the extra virgin organic coconut oil as a dietary supplement for the dogs. Their coats look wonderful. It has helped with licking/itching issues with one of my dogs. I have only used it on their coats as an additive to their shampoo. Once every couple months, I'll add about 1/8 cup c-oil to 2 cups of their shampoo) (, and about 1/8 cup of water and shake it up well, then wash like normal and rinse reeeal well. Then I don't used conditioner after that. Works great!! and they smell greeeeeat!! :) |
Ok. I am just doing it all wrong! Oops! Thanks guys for the points. :D |
I show yorkies and i always put coconut in their hair. It keeps it from getting tangled and it doesnt dry the skin out like some oils can. I just make sure on the day of a show to make sure and get all the oil out so it doesnt look greasy. So yes your yorkie will look greasy but if your trying to grow a showcoat or just grow out the puppy coat i would highly recommend using coconut oil. They also do love the taste. SO i always let them have some when i apply it. Amazingly they dont try to lick it off each other so that is good. I also heard somewhere that it is also a natural tick repellant i dont know though for sure. |
Thats interesting. I use coconut and almond oil shampoo and conditioner on my own hair and I suppose I could use it on Hedley's too. |
Is there a particular brand that you could recommend? Is it available at a regular store or does it need to be ordered online?it sounds like a great and simple solution to a matted cottony coat.. |

We ordered some from cocotherapy.com However since we have a show next weekend and Bolt is getting 2 baby teeth removed today I will be waiting to use it after the show is done. |
I ordered the kind that I got from poochieheaven.com. Of course I had to order some of the other great stuff too. |
I dont know if any of you use Salmon Oil, but I have just started adding it to Hedley's food and that has made his coat nice and shiney. |
I picked up some extra virgin, cold pressed, all natural coconut oil at the health food store today and Maximo went crazy licking it off of my hands. His skin and coat are showing a little bit of the drying signs of cold winter winds, so I'm hoping this helps. |
