Just got a Yorkie and have some questions. First of all this little guy is great! I got my wife a little 4 year old Yorkie for Christmas. Needless to say, she is already silly about him. lol Now, I have a couple questions about his breath and fur around his face. His breath is pretty bad. We bought some stuff you put in his water that is supposed to help his breath, but as of yet, it has not helped. Also, the fur around his face is pretty stinky. Is there anyway to keep that clean enough to keep it from smelling? Thank you |
Hi, Glad you are enjoying your new little boy. If he is four years old with bad breath, he probably needs to have a dental. The build up of tartar on their teeth causes infection and stinky breath (as well as other health problems). As far as stinky hair on the face is concerned make sure his eyes are not runny and there is no build up of eye gunk. If there is, carefully soften it and remove it with a comb. Some yorkies have runny eyes and you need to keep that area clean and dry. Make sure there is no hair growing into his eyes as that causes them to run more. I wash my dogs faces daily with a wet wash cloth and dry it. A constantly damp face can start a bacterial infection or yeast infection (both are really stinky). Also check his ears for smell, he may have an ear infection. The hair that is growing out from inside the ear canal needs to be plucked. Your vet or a groomer can show you how to do this. |
