i dont want to shave his beautiful coat..... He has matts on his bottom and on his sides....can anyone suggest how to get them out without having to shave him? Conditioner didnt work.:( |
You will need a slicker brush for mats. Make sure you don't touch the skin. Just work with a little hair at a time keeping your fingers under the hair that you are brushing. When all the mats are out, use some Petsilk to work into the hair where the mats were, then put about a dime size in your palm, rub palms together and then down the rest of the coat. i shave Maddies belly and some of the hair up the sides.... maddies hair gets matted easily too but ever since i shaved underneath, she does not matt anymore... heres a thread i started about it.... there are pics too... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ath-belly.html |
Cowboy magic is also another product that you can use. I seriously am thinking the next time to try evo on a mat to see what happens. I also shave the belly. Good Luck. |
If there were mats before a bath then it probably made the mat tighter & might be impossible to brush out now. I would shave the underbelly & arm pit areas. If the mats are to the skin on the sides, I would shave it & start over. With the cold months ahead, they'll probably be wearing clothes, & that'll also create mats underneath. So, shaving it off & growing it again is not a bad idea. If the mats are not that bad & you're able to work it out, try corn starch. Put it directly on the hair, doesn't matter how much you put on, it won't damage the hair. Rub it in real good, work it w/your fingers & w/a comb or slicker brush, work out the mat. Always hold the hair closest to the skin to avoid damaging the skin & becareful w/the slicker brush. |
I found Emu Oil helps but I also shave their tummies and the bad mats on their legs I cut off as you can't really see them with the long coats. |
It stinks but sometimes it's safer to just shave them out. Mats that are close to the skin and tight are difficult to remove and it hurts your puppy :( I suggest buying a mat breaker from PetEdge. It has hooked blades that break a big mat up, making it easier to comb out with a slicker or greyhound. Some hair will come out, but it's better than shaving. Remember: humanity before vanity. |
Thank you to all for your ideas....I am still working through the matts but its alot better....i sitll may have to shave a bit but we will see. |

Thanks Jencar98, You saved my life with your cornstarch post. It is indeed miraculous. I just can't believe it. I've had yorkies for over 20 years and I never heard of this but it is amazing. The mats just fall apart even at the skin line. Tangles snarls knots, etc. Thank you so much for your suggestion, Shellie Cassie and Muffin:) |
