Matting Nightmare - is this normal? I brush my baby, Athena, daily, but she doesn't seem to ever stop matting and getting knots. I used to work as a grooming assistant so I know how to brush all the way down to the skin - IDK WHAT TO DO!!! The new adult fur has started to come in and its nice and silky and straight and doesnt seem to mat, but her baby coat is woolyish and just a whole other texture....what is going on! It only mats in the baby coat so on the ends thankfully - is this normal - is there a solution  |
When Jack was a bit younger he would mat like crazy - he's a bit over 5 months old now and doesn't seem to mat nearly as bad as he did when we got him at 12 weeks. I'm assuming that as the baby hair is replaced with the stronger adult hair, it doesn't mat as much. Good luck with your baby! |
It will take a while, but right now she is losing the puppy coat and the loose baby coat is matting. Just keep after it and when it is gone things will be easier. I hate that stage. It can take me two hours to get through it. |
My Baron will be 2 @ the end of the month and he still mats terribly. He has a cottony texture coat. Sophie will be 2 the end of Dec. Her coat has a silky feel to it. She still matts but,They're easier to work free than Barons are! Baron matted more the older he got. When he was younger his hair was more silky than it is now. |
What shampoo/conditioner do you use? I was wondering what kind of shampoo/conditioner you use? Maybe a different one would benefit the coat better on him. Are you using a comb and a brush or jst brush? Misty |
I use a metal comb on her. I'm not sure what shampoo I use. It's some tearless puppy shampoo....can anyone make a recommendation? |
Try talking to a professional groomer that does hand stripping or carding. It's meant to pull that wooly hair out. Dogs like Airedale Terriers with that wiry coat usually get it done. Good news is that it will try to pull that puppy hair out and makes their coat look really nice! You can also try a leave in conditioner combined with that greyhound comb. Good luck :) |
