Tips/Tricks to detangle tough knots??? Hi Everyone!; I wanted to ask for tips, products or tools you use to detangle those tough knots on your babies??.... My little Chloe is only 5 months old, so her coat is not very long, but I'm having a very tough time detangling the knots she gets in her hair (and she is 100% indoor doggie, she doesn't go outside...so I don't know how she can get so tangled!). I comb her every morning and use Pet Head fur baby detangler mixed with a bit of her conditioner, but it still takes a lot of work to get those tangles out, and I wondered if anyone has a miracle product or tool to help make this easier on both of us! ;) Thanks!! Meli & Chloe:p |
she's at that age where her adult coat might be growing into her puppy coat. this is a major matting time. make sure you are using a metal comb to brush through her coat down to the skin to assure there are no mats left in once your finished brushing. I use Chris Christensen Ice on Ice as a detangler and leave in conditioner. It works great. |
3 Attachment(s) Hello, I'll try and help..... Quite a few peopl on here swear by Cowboy Magic, it's a tube of a slick feeling silicone type product. I tried it myself but found it a little thick....I came across this silicone type spray at Walgreens and WalMart called Hask Pure Shine (it's a human product), I like it better because it's a soft mist and easier for me to use.....It looks like this..... Attachment 293027 A lot of people also use a Slicker Brush, it's good for working out the mats. Just start at the bottom and work your way up after using either Cowboy Magic or Hask..... Attachment 293028 I used to take a pair of small pointed scissors and I would carefully insert one blade into the mat and do a gentle sawing motion working from the skin out to the bottom. It worked real well for me. It sure beat cutting a mat out and having a bald spot..... This is Cowboy Magic..... |
I picked up a pair of thinning shears at Walmart and cut straight across the knot then comb through with a metal comb -- the tangle comes right out and you can't see where you cut -- it just looks normal. |
Corn Starch works well for me. I just take a pinch and rub in onto the tangle and then slowly work the rat out with a metal comb. Sometimes I have to add a little more but it always works well for me. Like kalina82 said, make sure you are combing all the way to the skin, tangles are very good at hiding. :p |

Wow Cowboy Magic huh! I have horses and use the cowboy magic all the time. You want catch me brusing horse tails without it! Never thought about using it on the dogs. Thanks:thumbup: |
You've gotten such great advice here! I've used the cornstarch before & it does help. Thanks for the thread & helpful advice we can all use. Good Luck with yr baby! |
Thanks everyone;today is her bath day; I got a metal comb and the pure shine and will be trying that!, she's gotten so many knots on her chest and on her sides (as well as on her head from the topknots) and even on her face (i don't brush there regularly because she doesn't let me). I'm even thinking of getting some sort of hook screwed under my bathroom counter where I can hook her harness and have her stay put like in the groomers. It's just very crazy how I extremely comb out her knots every sunday after her bath (this takes me over 1.5 hrs aside from her bath) and she still manages to get tangled during the week, and she doesn't even walk outside!. Let's hope it goes better! ^_^ Thanks again for all the gerat advice!! Meli & Chloe |

I have a cotton coat little boy and he mats horrible! I have tried cowboy magic but it just didn't work well for us. I bought some Chris Christensen Ice on Ice spay and we love it. I have a CC Wooden Pin brush that I love too. It has really helped, he doesn't mind being still to get brushed like he does when I use my regular CC pin brush. He will sit and let me brush for a long time which makes being combed afterwards alot easier! I also take Harley in to get professionally bathed and brushed out at least once every three weeks! BIOLAGE DETANGLING SOLUTION!!! It works wonders........ use it on knotted areas and rinse.... you can use your fingers to work it thru the area. Then after rinsing, comb with care! Just remember to keep it away from eyes!!! We think it works wonderfully! (Between baths we use Chris Christensens Ice On Ice) Good Luck! |
Someone on here recommended this brush to me and it really does a great job with tangles and doesn't hurt like a slicker brush can. Amazon.com: Isinis Hair Brush * Made In France:... |
I have found that it is best to get out knots after a bath. I have a rat tail comb (get at box from Sally's) that I use and I also use the Dr. Miracle Detangling cream. You can get this from Wal-Mart or Sally's in the section near African-American hair care products. I wash her with Mane and Tale and then use the Motions Conditioner along with the furworse butter (Fur Butter (or fur worse) Ultra rich, deep conditioner for dogs with dry, itchy skin). I comb her while wet for Knots and after I dry her (using the detangling cream as needed while blowdrying) I spray her coat with an olive oil spray. Seems like alot but the washing is the easy part minus the fact Kikyo likes to eat and lick everything...LOL. Longest time is drying her. I comb and brush her daily but find that knots seems to be under her legs where she crawls on the carpet and picks up lint. |
Thanks for all this advice!; I now with a loooong list of tools and techniques to try! ^_^ I think the face knots are probably the worst, but I'm hoping she'll let me work on them. Thanks to all again!! Hugs, Meli & Chloe:) |
