Trying to deal with long hair please HELP!! ok so I have been trying to grow my yorkies hair out and its about medium length. Im getting frustrated cleaning the pee and poop out of his hair. I have been washing him about 2-3x a week and its making his hair look dry. Does anyone have any suggestions? :questione |
Are you trimming his bum area? If you do this, it will help eliminate any of those potty issues. |
dirty dog Does he have diarrhea? I was leaving my girl's hair long and she didn't have a problem with poop clinging to her hiney unless her poop was runny. Other wise I would, as Robin suggested, clip his hiney and the hair around his little man and tummy. :animal36 At the last dog show I attended, I noticed the Yorkies,(well the females anyway) did not have long tummy hair. Basicly it looked like the hair was grown out from along the back, sides, legs, well and of course the head and neck too. I would also just wash the dirty areas and reserve washing the whole dog just once a week. My vet says they carry a shampoo that can be used daily, but I don't think that is truely necessary. Unless he is laying and playing in his mess while you are out. Oh, there are oils you can use too for his hair, I have read many a Yorky book that "mentions" them, just never specificly the name brand or what kind of oil. Like could I use olive oil, or does one use a grooming oil of some kind, but that might help his hair and of course wrapping it, might help too? |
You need to trim around the butt area but if you are having issues with soft poop try a butt pony tail...that works well. Put it high up above the tail on their back and the poop won't get in their hair. |
Are you trying to grow a show coat? if so, you must not trim that area. I have show coats and I just 'spot wash" that area of hair when it happens. That generally holds them until I get ready to bath them. if you are not growing a show coat, then by all means trim it off. I would. |

I would do a sanitary trim ...that helps alot ps..this was Chanel back in the day - I loved her long hair but short is EASY. She still has a long top knot and I can still braid it but I do keep her body shorter |
Just add a dab of leave in conditioner in the back area or use a mixture of Nutregena Bath oil and water 50/50 and after bath just swish a bit of the mixture back there. This will work until the hair is long enough to wrap if growing a show coat. If not going to wrap just keep up with the leave in conditoner or oil mixture. You can also use both if needed. And only bath once a week. More than that will dry out the coat and skin. Best of luck with your baby. |
Its not that he has diareah he just gets lil terds stuck and its hard to get them out. then he thinks hes a ballerina and lifts his leg straight up in the air when he pees and it gets all over his skirt hair and leg hair |
Since he is a boy - you need to band up his side hairs. The urine can burn it. |
Thank you everyone |
My male has floor length hair but not a show coat. I use baby wipes, usually just once a day will freshen him up between baths. I also use a spray when I groom him each day and that also freshens him. I have the groomer do a sanitary cut, making a shaved area around his bum and then cutting most of the hair from his male part, leaving just a 2 inch or so strand that acts to direct the pee away from his body. If he is really bad about getting pee and poop on himself, just use a baby wipe each time he comes in from outside or after he uses the pad. If he is getting a lot of poop in his hair, consider his diet. I use Canidae, it is a good quality, low residue food (meaning it makes for fewer and smaller poops). They are also dryer and do not get in his hair. He just leaves these little tootsie roll like poops that are easy to pick up and dispose of and leave no mess on him or the pad. \ I consider havingmine groomed shorter a lot but he is just so daggone pretty with floor-length hair! So, I go the extra step or two to keep him smelling good. |
I'm growing out Uni's hair and she is having the same problem with the pee. She used to slightly move forward while peeing so that the one spot wouldn't get over saturated and not soak in anymore pee. Now she just stays in the same spot and her back leg hairs soak up pee! Her booty is stinking and she still wants to sleep with her butt in my face. Not good! I keep her poopy exit area clipped short, so poop is not a problem, but the peeps are! |

Piccolo also has problems with urine on her backside. It gets kind of sticky, before her bath, which causes hair breakage, when I comb/brush out. So, the leave in conditioner sounds like it could be a solution. What brand would you recommend and where could I find this? Thanks for your help. :) |
