Shaving the butt?
 
Smokey is always getting poop stuck to his butt and not just cling ons... some how it like gets caked on there and it's really gross to give him a bath. Anyways, he's not going to the groomers for another week and has more poop stuck to his butt... Any tips on how to shave it? also stupid question... what about razor burn? Do dogs get razor burn? Should I clip the area short first, then shave it?

Most people give their dogs a sanitary groom, and the area around the anus is clipped short or shaved. My DIL's groomer shaved her Maltese too close and a razor burn and irritation resulted, which lead to a very nasty infection. Because poop is bacteria laden, any break in the skin can lead to infection, so I never shave this area on Joey, I just keep it clipped short with scissors. I may be misunderstanding you, but if your dog is having lots of problems, I think the diet should be checked. Poop should be firm, and I'm wondering if your dog's poop is too soft. Joey never has any dingleberries. :D

You might have to wash it off first. You can use a men's trimmer or I like to use scissors and just cut the hair down.

Okay, maybe I should just clip the area instead of shaving it. That's why I posted here first cause naturally, I don't want to hurt him or anything. I was also concerned about a razor pulling his hair too. His poop usually is firm, but I think he poops, gets a cling on, then sits and it smashes or something. It gets hidden in his long hair and I don't notice it until it's all dried. I don't think his groomer cuts much, if at all, in that area because he's got a lot of long hair in that area.

HAHAHA okay thank you. I went to the link and his little butt has a lot more hair on it than the picture... omg that dogs face was priceless... like "What they heck are you taking a picture of my butt for?!" I'll probably trim it down with scissors for now and ask the groomer to cut the hair in the general rump area a little shorter than usual. I'm not a great groomer, so I think I'll dothe minimum amount possible. We tried to groom Chip one time when we were short on cash and it didn't turn out so good... lol

I think that's what I'm going to do. I'm gonna get him in a tub full of water and make his little butt sit in it to make my job easier lol

Ash when I cut Mitzy's hair on her butt I take a comb, comb the hair around her anus :rolleyes: and then take scissors and cut on top of the comb so i dont nick her bum. It keeps it really short without having to shave her whole backside. I do it every week or two when she gets bathed.. When I notice a "crusty" :p I do the same thing to get it off her

I ended up just giving him a bath and getting his little "problem" fixed. I didn't have anyone to help me hold him, so I couldn't trim, but I probably will this weekend.

I just hold Joey's tail up in the air, and he really can't move, with the other hand, I use the scissors to clip him.

I use scissors to trim the butt area too. Pretty easy to do.

We trim the hair around the anus area and we use baby wipes to clean her after each time she goes.
