Difference between "Baby Coat" and "Adult Coat"? Meg's groomer in Korea says that I need to shave her to get rid of her baby hair and let her adult hair grow in. He seems to think that it will be more silky and not matt as easily. Meg is 9 months old. Has anyone ever heard of this?! I really don't want to shave her, but she does tend to matt fairly easily. If shaving will help, then I might do it...:eyebrow2::scratchhe |

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. Show breeders don't cut the hair on the pups & by the time they're 9 months old, he/she will have a full coat. I think the texture & the kind of hair on a Yorkie will not grow out differently because of a cut. One thing that will be diffrent (if cutting) will be the color. Maybe Meg has a modified coat where it's silky but mats easily. |
I was told the same thing, I had molly shaved at 3 mths, she was very dark and has a cotton coat that matts very easy, she is now 2 and all silver and blonde, she still has the cotton coat so we keep her in a puppy cut to avoid the matts :( Her coat never changed texture from being shaved. |
Hearing this, I think I will not shave her. I love her coloring the way it is now, and I just don't think the shaving will change her coat texture. Thanks for your input, ladies! |
There is definately a difference between the puppy hair and adult hair if she is going to be silky. The puppy hair will mat so easily and the silky hair will rarely mat, more a tangle if anything. The puppy hair will gradually go away on its own. I don't know if it all just falls out or half of it comes out from brushing, but it will go away without shaving. I think the shaving is more of a short cut to get rid of the puppy hair but it does change the whole look for a few months. I chose not to shave Ben's off. The female I had, Sadie, had a thicker coat and I did cut her down short (not a shave but short) and actually kept her that way. Rocky, the puppy I have now, has very fine puppy hair that mats very easily. I will still let his grow out naturally. It is more aggravating, but I have heard the color will be different if you shave it from a dog that has never been shaved down. I don't mean just the initial change, I mean the resulting adult coat. I have only read and heard that. Don't know for sure. |
