Help With Teeth Brushing Tonight I purchased a toothbrush kit for my furbaby and tried to brush his teeth it was like wrestling an alligator Are there any tips that you guys have to make it easier? Will he ever get use to it? |
well i noticed that the brushes in those kits are made for a great dane! not our little guys. So i use an infant toothbrush- much better fit! go slowly- let him lick the toothbrush- chew on it. Put toothpaste on your finger- let him lick that- try sticking it in his mouth and getting it on his teeth. in a few days try putting toothpaste on the brush and let him lick it and chew on it. (I brush Layla's teeth with her lying on her back... so slowly start getting him used to that) and just slowly start brushing it on his teeth. It might take a bit but he'll tolerate it eventually. Lay still hates it- but she puts up with it long enough for me to get it done- you'll find you will get quite fast at it :) |
My 4lb Bitsy can be a squirmy handfull at times, but after the vet showed me how to brush her teeth, I've had no trouble and do it every night before bed. I put her on top of the bathroom vanity and as she watches I put a little poultry-flavored toothpaste on a tiny toothbrush and then I say, "Let's brush your teeth! Smile for Daddy.", and with the thumb and index finger of my left hand around her muzzle, I gently pull up her gums from the sides and quickly brush her teeth. She will give me about 10 seconds before she has had enough, but (IMO) that's enough time to brush. I'm hoping that the enzime toothpaste also continues to work for a while afterwards. Since we have been doing this nightly brushing (2 months now), she knows it is coming and when I say, "Smile for Daddy!", she has recently started showing me her teeth. Eventually, I may not have to open her gums with my fingers at all. Now, if I could just get her to be still for a nail trimming...:hmmm33: |
What about those rubber things that go over your fingers and you can use to brush your dog's teeth? Has anyone ever tried those instead of a toothbrush? I think I'd have an easier time getting my finger in Chloe's mouth (as she usually wants to chew on them anyway!) than in getting a toothbrush in there. -C |

thanks for the tips guys! I bought him Poultry flavored toothpaste and he seems to being doing a lot better! before he had mint flavored and he hated it I couldn't even get the brush in his mouth, but yesterday I used the poultry toothpaste and he let me brush all of his teeth yay:D and I bought him an infant toothbrush today so im going to try that tonight Is it okay to use an baby toothbrush for him? |
Another alternative to a toothbrush of any kind is to use a piece of guaze wrapped around your index finger. My girls are fine with that, but not with any type of toothbrush, infant or finger brush. Plus, you can feel that you have done all the teeth and it is gentle on the gums also. |

Brushing teeth I notice that nobody suggested the disposable gloves with the little "brush" on one finger and the thumb. (I wash them good and use them until they get a hole in them.) My little girl is only 3 3/4 pounds so has a very small mouth. I find that the gloves work very well. The more often you brush the teeth the easier it gets. :-) Jacki Quote:
