What a good idea about the stocking! I'll have to try that, since Smokie is ready for a nail trim I will do his nails after his bath tomrrow. This is correct - they do get softer in the water so after bath time is a good time. Also, Smokie has tried the squirming with me, and I just hold him tighter. I wll not let him go until he is completely calmed down, then I make him lay at my feet. After about 15 mins of being calm and laying by me as i asked, he gets a treat. The others are right, when you let go, your baby just won the fight. It doesn't hurt them to hold them until they quit squirming. It just shows them who rules the roost, and teaches them to mind you, and eventually to trust you. Also, I trim the tips, then I use a regular nail file to smooth the edges. I use a clipper with a safety on the back of the clippers so I only cut as much as I want. Good luck! |

Thanks guys for so much great advice! I hope it works! |
Nail trimming a battle When I first got Belle at 12 weeks I started touching and playing with her feet when ever I held her. A week later I trimmed her nails with no problem, too good to last! For some reason now she just freeks out and struggles so hard I can't hang onto her. The vet showed me how she does it and since I have my husband to help it gets done. He holds Belle, which ever way is needed, and hugs her to his body very firmly, I grab one paw and trim. It gets done even though my husband hates it as he is afraid he will hurt her when she struggles so hard. The vet says it won't hurt her, if you let her go she wins. |
I have to admit Smokie is a challenge. I used to have a Lab, and when I would do her nails, she would sit up and just give me her paw. I sometimes wonder if Smokie will EVER do that. I had him at the groomer's about a month ago, and she did an awesome job on his nails, so I haven't had to mess with them lately. But I'm not sure I'm taking him back, because I just didn't like the way she cut him. So guess I will get those socks out. Also, I bought some infant sized socks at the goodwill just for Smokie and they work great on him. LOL. Getting ready for winter. I read on here a while back there is a reason they are called Terriors. LOL. But I wouldn't trade my little Terrior for anything! I just love him so. Good luck with the nails.
