Help with bathing! Okay to start Roxy is 1 1/2 yrs old and Charlie is 10 months. Ive had them both since they were puppies and I usually bath them once a week. Everytime I bath them they are absolutely terrified of the water especially in their face. I always use a cup to rinse the soap off and I pour the water on their head to get the soap off their faces... my questions are.. 1. Is there a way to rinse the soap off that is less traumatizing, they freak out when the water is put in their face or eyes. 2. I think the water gets in their ears when I'm rinsing, I tried cotton balls but they always fall out... is it really harmful for it to get in their ears? 3. How can I make bath time fun time? Thanks!!! :D |
My two don't really like bath's either. I tried the cotton balls and they fall out also. What I have found that seems to work is I pull the ears down and hold my hand under the jaw and place my fingers over the outside of the ears and plug them that way. Good luck! |

1. I dont know of any other ways, sorry. 2. I tried cotton balls, they fall out for me too. I hold the ear down against the head when i'm rinsing it so I dont get water/soap inside it. 3. The way I made water in general less traumatizing for Miley is I gave her "swimming lessons" in the bath tub and it helped a lot. JUst remember for the first few lessons, start out really shallow water, and then get gradually deeper untill they have to swim.:aimeeyork |

I use a pet shower head so I can rinse the dog really fast and bad them in no time. Also, wash the head at the end as the dogs usually hate when they get water in their face/nose. wash them after a long walk and give them a nice treat after |
I bought the Hydrosurge system at Wal-Mart ($40) and Gwen really enjoys it, plus it gets through her coat quickly and it has the soap in it so you don't have to stop to soap and let them get cold. I call it her "massage" every time she gets her bath....now if only I could get one! |
Yeah I always make sure to wash their heads last, they just make me feel like a horrible mom everytime.. :( |
Use a baby washcloth My dogs like baths, but here's maybe a tip that could be useful for you: Use baby washcloths to clean around the ears, eyes & nose. I have a shower/sprayer hose that I bought for $6 at Runnings that hooks up to my utility sink, making bath time a breeze. I tip up the head & get the top of the head & underneath the chin wet, but I usually avoid using the sprayer on the rest of the head/eyes/nose & around the ears (unless I'm in a hurry) & use the baby washcloth instead. I use a baby washcloth & put a little bit of shampoo on it & get the head, outside ears (I don't touch the inside of the ears - I use ear cleaner fluid stuff for the inside of the ears) & around the eyes, and I also rinse off the wascloth & use the rinsed washcloth to rinse the pup. It is much less stressful for them. I bet if you try that it will give you a little more control over where the water goes. Best of luck to you at bathtime! |

Try not to get water in their ears, it can cause ear infections. Close off their ear w/your fingers or fold it down. They don't like it when water goes in their nose either. I bath mine in the kitchen sink, it has a pull out faucet (don't know what they're called! lol) It makes it alot easier. |
I tryed to wash mine in the sink because I also have the pull out tap, but they always try to escape haha. |
bribery works I bathe my Bella in the kitchen sink with the pull out sprayer also. I use my very wet hand over and over kinda like a cat on her mouth/nose, eyes. She likes this much better than the sprayer. Although, I do use the sprayer for the rest of her body. I leave it on the soft flow until rinsing. I give tiny pieces of treats through out bathing and nail care process. It REALLY makes a huge difference. Good luck. Keep those tiny treats handy. |
terrified of water :eek:my little one is terrified of water when she here it bath time she get really upset !! what makes her is terrified of water could the groomer been mean to her .. so one help  |
I bathe Chewie in the kitchen sink and he's very good about the whole thing. One thing I learned lately is that dog shampoo should be diluted. On a grooming dvd I bought she said the bottle should be diluted 4 to 1. I bought a gallon of all natural ingredients that is 16 to 1. It is soooooooo much easier to rinse then when I used straight shampoo and I'm sure it's a lot less damaging on his coat and skin. Also if he/she tries to get out of the sink, a small leash tied to a tap or faucet helps. |
