To cut or not to cut!! I have kept the hair on my youngest little guy fairly long since he has no problem with matting, etc. and has nice silky hair (when he returns from the groomer that is!!). But it has been extremely humid this year here and it makes it feel so much hotter and I feel he really may enjoy a shorter cut. My question concerning this is once the hair has been cut short will it grow back in differently; cottony as opposed to silky, etc. My groomer keeps trying to talk me into a puppy cut for him but I'm just not sure I'm up to it and would appreciate advice. I just worry about what it will look like once it grows long again. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated! |
It will still grow in silky but you may see a color change as the new hair grows in. That would be seen eventually anyway if it does but cutting it short sort of makes it seem more obvious. I keep Ben's long even in the Florida heat. His silky hair stays fairly cool to the touch and I don't let him outside very long when it is hot (and would do the same even if he had short hair). I say go with what you want, don't let the groomer talk you in to cutting if you aren't really wanting to. Now a thick, cottony coat will probably be cooler for the dog if kept short in the summer. But with the silky, thinner coats, I do not think it matters. |
I agree w/Debra. If your Yorkie already has silky beautiful hair, don't cut it!:D In the hotter months, I do shave Mimi's belly area, just so she can feel cooler when she's sprawled out on the floor. |
I kept Katies hair long but the other day she rolled in cut grass and she was a HUGE mess. I gave her the puppy cut and regretted it since but she seems so much happier since she can roll around in the cut grass and I dont get upset:D |
3 Attachment(s) I prefer Jackson's hair shorter :) He likes it better and it's much easier for me to maintain. The third picture is another shorter, but not so short, style that I loved on Jackson. |
1 Attachment(s) I cut Patrick's puppy fur on his body super short because of the matting and the extreme heat we have been having in FLA. But he went from looking like a rolly polly puppy to a sleek and long legged dog in minutes and I am having a hard time getting used to it :( |

Thanks everyone for the advice, opinions and the pictures. I don't think I struggled with a decision too hard at all. I just didn't have the heart to cuit his hair off and he's not really outside very long at all so that really shouldn't be a problem as far as the heat is concerned. He came back from the groomer's this afternoon as he normally does and we were all happy with that so he'll be keeping his long coat for now. Thanks once again for the help. |
