When to get a first haircut? Hi - When did you all get your fist cut on your pups? Bluebelle and her sister Poppy are 18 weeks and are both really hairy! They have a lot of hair on the inside of their legs, so we are constantly wiping them after peepees, but they can't see out very much through the mop on their head...with Belle having had the leg shaved when she broke it and the extra bits that they took to get IVs into her, she looks a bit....odd. I booked them both in with a mobile coming on Monday, but my MIL (Poppy's mum) let slip to the breeder in an update that we are getting them cut and she said that they shouldn't need it...are they too young? |
I brought Jackson to the groomers at around 19 weeks old, I want to say. It was a small groomers though and he was the only dog in there at the time. He hadn't had his Rabies shot or anything yet but they didn't even ask. |
Thanks, Britster |
I brought Piper to the groomer at 12 weeks just to get her nails done and ears shaved. This is a way to introduce her to the groomer and grooming. Then 6 weeks later she had her first hair trim. I've been going to the same groomer for 25 years and I always have my babies groomed every 6 weeks. This way Piper it is easy to keep combed so she never has any tangles and snarls. I always bathe her at least once in between her hair cuts. I always say that Piper is better groomed than I am. |
Jewels got her first hair cut at 16 weeks and Chachi was 20 weeks |
Scooter got his first hair cut when he was like 15 weeks old. I booked him an appointment and waited outside the salon (where he couldn't see me) for them to finish. I was worried about leaving him but he did great. It sounds like you don't want your babies at the salon too long either. A mobile groomer is a great option. So long as they are used to working with such little ones, you should be fine. They are your babies and if you feel they need a hair cut, you did the right thing in scheduling one for them. Be sure the groomer is aware that it is their first cut so they will take more time with them. If they get squirmy, the groomer can stop and you can try later. You want them to enjoy the groomers so it may take some time for them to adjust to someone new touching them with different combs all over. Another trick that I used for his first few cuts was I took Scooter's favorite treats with me to the salon. Every few minutes, the groomer would stop and reward him for staying calm. Needless to say, it then became really fun...all he had to do was stay still and he got rewarded. Now, he gets rewarded with one big treat at the very end. Good luck with the hair cut! I think you did the right thing if you feel their hair was getting too long. |
I did not have Suzi professionally groomed until she was about 5 months. I wanted to make sure she had all her vaccines completed first. I did, however, bathe her and took care of her coat myself. |
Apple started needing her ears/paws & bottom trimmed when she was 4 months old, and I had a friend w/a yorkie that did it for me...She did it again at about 5 1/2 months old too...Now Apple is almost 8 months old, and, totally, in need of a haircut, but I was trying to hold out 'till she was a year old...That's not going to happen lol...When I get her puppy hair cut off (it's black) she'll be mostly gold/silver/white, and I know she will look beautiful, but I also know she'll look totally grown up!!! Not sure if I'm ready for that yet:rolleyes: |
So sad today - the worst yorkie haircut ever. Most of the hair on to p of the head has gone and he has left a skirt - looks very schnauzer-esque. Totally unhappy...note to self, never leave with DH for cuts. They both look like they had too much botox and are suprised! Gutted. |

Missy still hasn't had a haircut. She is 10 months. I trim her ears, feet, and nails myself. |
