getting rid of matted hair so my yorkie is matted on his chest area and on his sides. everything else on him is fine. i tried combing him for the past few days to get rid of the matted hair, but i'm now realizing it is impossible. i'm thinking of using hair clippers and buzzing the whole thing off. do you think that's ok? have any of you done this? i would hate to waste $70 at the groomers if that's all they're going to do anyways, you know? |
I say buzz it! :D Nah, you can just start by cutting out the matting and see how it looks from there. |
Well, once they get matts, it's almost impossible to get them out. If they are just on his tummy and under his legs, the groomer could just take care of those areas, but it has to be your call. Gizmo matts horribly with his cottony hair. He's much happier in a short cut (and he looks cute too).:D Puppy hair is really easy to matt. You really have to brush it every day, and even then there's no guarantee. |

i think i'm going to do it myself. thanks for the input. |
Please be very careful...if he is matted down to his skin you will have to be extra careful so you don't nick him. |

Yes, I agree with this, although you got a lot of replies saying "go for it" I'm not sure how many have ever done this, from what i've read, it's very tricky even for a professional groomer. it depends how close the mat is to his skin. Grooming shouldn't cost $70.00, you should be able to find one much cheaper than that, and she might be able to give you some tips, so you could start doing it yourself. |

There are lots of products to help get mats out. Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine is a great one. I use it full strength -- just rub a little on those mats and then you can gently pull them apart with your fingers. I used this when Ben and Sadie still had that fine puppy hair that will mat if you look at it wrong. :) I have also read that rubbing cornmeal into a mat will help detangle it like magic! There are many other detangling products -- even human conditioner or spray detanger for kids works on some mats. I would try these sorts of products before shaving it off. Not only is it difficult to shave if the hair is matted close to the skin, matted hair also dulls your clippers or trimmers quickly. Even if you have a professional groomer do it, they may charge extra due to the extra wear on their tools. |

he was matted so bad that i decided to just cut his hair. he did fine and didn't wiggle around. i guess all that training to have him sit still while i did his hair paid off. he just laid on my lap on his back while i snipped away at the matted hair. his hair on his underside might be uneven, but his hair is so sparse in that area that you wouldn't be able to tell. i will purchase one of those detangler products in the near future in case he gets matted again. i sure learned my lesson. i will make sure he doesn't get matted that bad ever again. his hair looks so silky and sits nicely after he's been brushed and combed. thanks everyone for your help and advice! |

Joey matted a little as a puppy especially under the arms after wearing clothes. I used the Cowboy magic detangler before the bath and mats came right out. I used the detangler in a circular motion, between my thumb and forefinger, right on the mat until it untangled. I've read that it's important not to wet the hair with water when trying to get out a mat, as water can make it worse. Some people use regular conditioner and just work it into the mat, and others have suggested that cornstarch also works, although I've never tried this. There are matting combs that have a sharp blade between the teeth, and these too, must be used with caution, but they cut right through the mat. I honestly think you should look for another groomer, there are many show breeders that will groom your dog, and know many different cuts and styles and they don't charge that much. It sounds like that grooming shop comes with bragging rights! :D |

anyways, i'm going to look into those detanglers. i just googled cowboy magic detangler and it sounds great. i'll have to place an order soon. thanks, nancy! |
A moot point now that you've cut his hair...but in the future do not bath a dog until he is brushed out completely. Mats are almost impossible to remove once they've gotten wet. The detanglers work well...and try to seperate the mat into three sections and then comb out. If the mat is bad enough...don't cut it out...cut into the mat and then comb. I own two with soft coats and yes, they require brushing/combing every day cause if not...they are walking mat balls. |
