Beginner's top knot My puppy's fur is still not long or thick enough to try a top knot and I never put one on my deceased yorkie's head. Once I did try putting a teeny tiny plastic hair clip on the other yorkie, but he took it out and tried to eat it!! So my question is, what should I use to train my puppy to accept a top knot bow? And if he wears one will the five month old puppy ( that he plays with every day) rip it out and chew it? Any words of wisdom that you could give would be much appreciated. |
By five months he should have enough hair to get up in a wee topknot. You should use grooming bands. Putting it up regularly gets him used to having it done and also having something in his hair. And yes, sometimes other puppies will try to take out bows out of the other's hair. |
I would try putting a band on every day and leaving it in for as long as he tolerates it. I have 2 of mine in topknots, but if I put a bow in Cali Roxie has it out in 2 minutes no matter how much I try to stop her. So Roxie gets a bow and Cali just has a band in. |
I had no luck keeping bows in -- they all helped each other right out of them. Ben will even rub his head on everything to try to get his own out. I am going to try just bands on a very small portion of hair for a while and see if he gets more used to it. |
Thank you for your replies. :) I had to laugh at FLDebra's answer because my friend, who has a 5 month old, put a tiny bow on the female puppy's head and she started to frantically poke her head in and out of the "Hide A Bee" hive in an attempt to remove the unwanted "parasite" from her puppy fuzz. My friend took the bow off after a short amount of time, but we were wondering how anyone can get these feisty little furbabies to accept a foreign object tied to their heads!:aimeeyork |

I think the sooner you get them use to the top knot, the less trouble you will have with them keeping it in! Good Luck! |
I've been struggling with this for some time now. Every morning I brush Noelle and put a wee little band in her hair, she goes right to the sofa pillows and runs her head through them until it comes out. To look at her you would think I never even paid any attention to her hair! |
