Help trimming nails!!! I can do all grooming myself but I just can't seem to be able to trim nails GRRRR I'm just a chicken I'm afraid I'll make them bleed. Any tips - truly appreciated :D |
yeah, I have that problem too. Just trim a tiny bit once a week and that will help. I got one of those dremmel like rotating nail filers, havn't tried it yet. I suppose you could file off too much too. Just go a little at a time. We got one of those expensive nail clippers with a green and red light. If it was green when you inserted your dog's nail, it was supposed to be safe to clip. If the red light lit up you were supposed to adjust where you put the nail and try again. However, we couldn't get it to be stable, it would be green when I knew there was too much nail in the clipper and be red when there was just a tiny bit. I can't remember the name of them, they were expensive and I didn't trust them. We took them back the next day. Good luck and just trim a tiny bit once or twice a week till you get them where they should be. Remember the quick will grow too, so don't let them get too long! |
Hi Irma! It's esp hard cuz our little ones have those darn blk nails!!:D Here's a tip I learned from grooming school: trim little by little until you see the black dot in the middle. Now, this works if your yorkie stays still enough for you, but my Momo is a major wiggler. He acts like I'm going to kill him or something! In that case, I just take a huge deep breath & hope that I don't cut his quick. I just cut the part where it starts to curve. I know I can do this to him cuz his quick is kinda far back, but some dogs have their quick long. In that case, it's ok if you cut the quick, don't panick (cuz they can pick up on your energy) just apply quick stop (or flour if not available) & some pressure on it to stop the bleeding. The quick will retract & be furthur away from the tip of the nail. Try to avoid cutting the quick tho...they remember the pain & may not like that particular nail to be cut in the future. In that case, after cutting the nail, praise him & give him his favorite treat to associate that cutting nails is not too bad. |
Thanks Guys I actually bought the pedi paws - but they hate the sound :( I also bought the clipper with lights, I agree it wasn't accurate at all:eek: Yeah, I know they can sense my fear which is why they're also freaked out when I try to clip. LOL Good tip I will try little at a time. I have 2 small ones that are the worst babies LOL but I think it's because they have been cut at quick by groomer and vet. So they hate it :( |
Here is another thing that could help, unfortunately I forgot where the website it but if you googled it , it should come up at the top. Someone here on the forums gave a website about clicker training. On that website is a free web video for clicker training for nail trimming! She does it in one day I think. mostly done with nice treats and getting the dog to touch the trimmer. I suppose you could treat your Yorky,then turn on the Pedipaw for a sec and treat again, making sure they don't run away first. Treat them for not running away when you hold it in your hand and then when you turn it on and they don't run away. Make it fun and interesting for them. One toe at a time ;) |

I bought a PediPaws also an how I got Hiro to take to it was I first held him in my lap with the trimmer next to him-treat, then actually touched the trimmer (off) to each paw-treat, then held trimmer away from him a little, turned on-treat, then just barely touched one nail with trimmer on-treat..so now when I get the trimmer out, he jumps on the little couch waiting for me to sit down so he can climb into my lap and get his nails done because then he gets his special treat! Of course then I have to do the two other dogs nails so they can earn one of the special nail-treats. Hiro has two white nails so I have an idea where his quick is, and it is kinda long so the PedPaw is my best option. Good luck with the trimming!:animal-pa |
