Yorkie summer haircut
 
Hi to all - How do you recommend cutting a Yorkie's hair for the summer in the Northeast? I know it's a personal preference but how short do you usually go? Does it help to keep them cooler or not?:confused:

Sully is going for his first summer haircut on Saturday and I was going to get him a Schnauzer Shave cut with a Westie head, but the groomer said not to go that short cause the fur protects them from sunburn. Good advice I thought.

So we're going with a longer Schnauzer cut on the body, leaving an inch of fur on the body and sticking with the Westie cut for the head.

I would say it depends on your lifestyle and preference.
I shave Buddy's back and leave the hair on his legs and head
longer, also cutting the facial hairs shorter.
He has had many different cuts, longer also at times and
this is my preference. I leave the a/c on all day during the
summer months as needed. He pants bad in the heat so I
know this cut is better for him.

Ok - I think I will see what the groomer recommends - It is a new one who came from references. The last time I left his legs longer and not sure if I should go shorter??

Your Snickers is SO cute!! I am partial to pups named Snickers;)! Mine is the love of my life as well!! Well, next to my hubby of course...they are neck and neck!! I think there is 1 or 2 other Snickers on YT...I know one other who's mom also has a Baxter:).

Welcome!! You're gonna be addicted soon!! Heehee.
Ps. I keep Snick with short hair all year long...it's gets to matted otherwise!

Tater and CoCo went today. Here's their new summer cuts. I like to keep them short year round. It's just a personal preference and ease of care for me. CoCo has very thick fur and gets hot easily. Tater is always cold, but he looks very 'droopy' if it goes too long.

I have Chloe's body cut about the same length as Coco's, but leave her face & head untouched because I love her beard and if anyone cut off her ponytail again, I'd have to hurt them :cool:.

I think it really depends on what type of coat your yorkie has. A yorkie with a thick cottony coat, I think looks better in a puppy cut or shorter cut. A yorkie with a silky coat can go either way. Here is a picture of my Shorty taken several years ago at the groomers. He has a fairly thick coat but it is not cottony and does not mat easily but it is easier to care for when it is shorter on the back.

I think Snick must have more cottony coat - It's very curly when it's cut shorter:cool:
