Best scissors to use? Jackson went to the groomer right before Easter and while I LOVE the way she cuts his hair and always listen to what I want -- It'd be SO much cheaper if I could just maintain it myself. What are the best scissors to use on them? The other day, I saw a few pieces of hair that were long and I just took a regular pair of cutting scissors and chopped some away! LOL. But I'd like to learn how to do it properly. |
Go to a beauty supply place and purchase hair cutting shears. |
I started grooming Buddy myself about 1 1/2 yrs ago. Little by little I added to my grooming supplies. I finally went out to our local hairdressing supply store to purchase a good pair of scissors. I paid $80.00 for a pair that felt comfortable in my hand and were thin and slim. They maker if Fromm. Talking to my hairdresses a couple weeks later I asked her how I get them sharpened when needed. She told me something I never thought about. She said I could have purchased the cheaper ones for $10.00 or $15.00 and used them until they needed sharpening and then throw them away and buy a new pair. They should last me a very long time to begin with because I am only cutting Buddy and not using them for anything else. That what she does as a hairdresser at times. The cheaper ones are just as good for what we need them for. As long as they are for hair cutting to begin with. |
As a groomer I highly recommend Chris Christensen scissors. Not only do the fit nicely in the hand, but they are very quiet so, they don't upset the dog. |
My Harley is 7 months and has started to get cuts at the groomer but it is very expensive. He is so hyper that I don't know if i could do it myself. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how to get them to sit still long enough for you to do the cut? Also, Is it easier to cut with scissors or use clippers? I know Harley totally freaks out with the blow dryer so I'm not sure how they do it at the groom. |
I went to Ulta a beauty supply store, and the most expensive scissors they sold were around $30.00. I was expecting to pay much more. They didn't begin to compare with some older hair cutting scissors I had, and wondered where I could buy them locally. I like the longer shears, for trimming around the face, and these don't work that well, so I still using my old scissors. By the way, Carol, I'm a fan of good scissors, and if yours ever do dull, Joanne's fabric store has a scissor sharpening service that is around 10-15 dollars a pair. I just don't believe that cheap scissors, even new, work near as well as good scissors, maybe for cutting paper, but not for hair, you get a much smoother, less choppy look with really good scissors. The way a stylist holds hair, between the fingers, you don't really need super sharp scissors, but if you are cutting the angle of the face without holding the hair, good scissor are a must. |

I use both clippers and clippers. I use curved scissors, straight and blending shears. 2 types of clippers one for the body and a Whal Peanut for food pads and ears. How they do it at the groomers is very sad...they put him in a cage and turn on the dryer. That's why I decided to learn how to groom, all the dogs I do are dried in my arms and brushed as we go. |
Thanks for all the advice :) |
Hi. I just groomed Pepper this evening. I have a pair of 6.5" straight shears, 6.5" curved shears, and a pair of thinning shears. Pepper does so much better with scissors than with clippers. |
I found a pair of long shears at tuesday morning and purchased a 6.5 curved pair from PPE pet supply (online). I found a short pair of scissors and thinners at the Dollar tee. So far I've had no problems. I Love the curved scissors. I got the long shears at my Tues morning on the island...I think they still had a couple of pair left. the next time you're over, you can check it out or I can check for you if you'd like. they were $9.99. let me know. :) |
