Puppy Baths? Ok I did a search about this and all the conflicting info has me confused! I read several people that don't giving young puppies baths at all because they could get chilled. Others give regular baths after 8 weeks or so. I picked up Bailey from the breeder at 10 weeks. She had already had at least 2 baths there. The breeder told me to give her a bath every 3 days. I've had her almost 3 weeks and have only given her 2 baths, so I'm doing more like weekly, but now I'm wondering if it's ok? She'll be 13 weeks tomorrow. I bathe her in the sink by pouring warm water on her with a cup. I have her sit on a washrag so she's not on the cold sink. She does shake the whole time, but I know it's partly because she's scared. I live in Southern California and the house is always between 65-75. I do the bath very quickly and then wrap her up in a towel. I try to blowdry her a little, but she gets more scared and shakes more, so I usually just hold her in the towel while she dries. Is what I'm doing fine? Can I continue to give her baths but just do something differently? Or should I stop? I was just going to give her a bath today but now I'm not sure... |
I dont' believe in frequent bathings. Is your puppy strictly inside? If so, she isn't even dirty from going out, so why bathe her so much? When you bahte a dog too much, you're washing out the natural oils. My 2 outside dogs are almost 4 years and 3 years, the one that's almost 3(german shepherd) has never had a bath period. She has got beautiful shiny hair(she's a long haired gsd) and the golden has had one bath when she was my sons dog, she also has beautiful shiny hair. Mine are pretty much strictly inside dogs, I do let them out to play once in awhiel on a nice day, but, they get about 3-4 baths a year. They all also have beautiful hair, well, except my yorkie, but, she's having a problem with allergies right now and it seems to be affecting the hair.:( |
I bathe mine once a week inn the warmer months when they are outside and once ev ery two weeks in the colder months. I started giving them baths at 8 weeks |
I usually end up giving Jackson a bath every 1-2 weeks just because he gets so messy especially with the rain we've been having here. In the winter time, it was usually like once a month. And I gave him his first bath 2 days after I brought him home at 9 weeks old. |
We do our best to bathe them every 1-2 weeks, but to be honest, we have gone beyond that at times! We brought Wrigley home at 12 weeks and we started bathing her right away. We always make sure we dry them all the way, especially in the cooler months. It's not unusual for them to shake while you are giving them a bath. We bathe them in the kitchen sink, we have a deep one. We just make sure the water is warm, but not too warm. You could look into some of the dryers that are quiet, that might help some. |
Baths My babies go to the groomer every 6 weeks. As for baths, as needed. The babies also have a baby pool that they love to jump into when it's hot. I have a walk in shower so many times while rinsing my hair, I open my eyes to find them in the shower with me.Maybe they are water dogs. |

We gave our litter of puppies a bath at five weeks (last week) only becuz they reeked of pee from playing all over the newspaper they were peeing on. They shook the whole time and did not like it, especially when I got out the hair dryer! I think I should have waited a few more weeks, but it is hard to kiss on puppies when they smell like little urinals. hehe. However I will try to hold off on another bath till ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Btw, this is our first litter, so we are making all the mistakes now. Poor little puppies... |
My new yorkie is about the same age as yours. I know she was bathed before I got her (12 weeks by breeder). I have bathed her once since. I believe in bathing about once a month. I know at our yorkies ages, their hair is really growing and does require attention. One tip, DON'T EVER USE HUMAN SHAMPOO OR CONDITIONER. I had a breeder once tell me to use Head and Shoulders on my past yorkie, Mufasa, and he had problems with his skin. I think it good to try to hold off as much as possible unless there are some sanitary issues. I wash my yorkies the same way you do and think you are doing a GREAT JOB!!!!! |
My vet recommended once a month for puppies...only cuz their skin is so delicate & can dry easily. I get a wet wash cloth or bath wipes & do wipey baths, or partial baths if their hiney gets stinky. Mimi & Momo get weekly baths now, sometimes a week & a half. After two weeks, they start to smell & they look a mess! |

But for puppies .... I have 5 right now (7 weeks old). The experienced breeders suggested that I not bathe them until they were ready to go to new homes -- 12 weeks. I tried, but I just cannot do it. They are stinky little things, always making messes and getting in them. So, I am not submerging them but using a wet washcloth to thoroughly clean them every other day and baby wipes in between. They need it believe me. I like to love on them a lot and I don't want them smelly plus with 5 of them, I don't want the house to get smelly. They don't shake if you don't completely soak their skin. Just use the washcloth to clean the hair, paws, and private areas. I am keeping the house warmer while they are young too and use the blow dryer if I get them too wet. |
I have allergies and this was one of the reasons why I decided to get yorkies. I am allergic to most environmental allergens, including dog hair/dander, dust, pollen, etc. and the dogs sleep with me in my bed. So, Cash gets a bath EVERY WEEK. We started when he was eight weeks old and little June has had her first bath with me this week. Thursdays we do all the washing, including the dogs:). Cash is a messy dude though, so sometimes (like the time he got hold of sweet-'n-sour pork sauce with rice - rookie mistake:rolleyes:) he gets an emergency bath. Cash and June get a freshening up once a day with the brush, baby wipes and vaseline (for tear streaks and boogers). |
