how do i get my puppies to let me comb their face? i'm having the toughest time trying to clean/comb my puppies face. they have all this eye gunk that i want to clean w/ a comb and they won't let me. they both move constantly. i'm afraid to poke their eye out so i've just about given up. the only time i can clean it is when i give them a bath because the water softens the gunk and it just comes off. however, i want to be able to groom their faces everyday. does anyone have any advice on how to get them to stay still? |
I clean eye gunk daily with a wet cotton ball (I recently started using calm eyes). Combing seems that it might hurt? Anyhow, Bailey doesn't like it but she tolerates it. Plus she gets a treat afterwards. Good luck!! |

I use a wet wash cloth w/warm water. I gently wipe off the eye burgers. You can use a flea comb if the area is wet, but a wash cloth is best, I think. Cotton balls leave that spider web thingy.:D |
I use a baby wipe daily and then comb it out while she is wet from her bath (usually while we are allowing her condition to sit a minute). Combing it while dry does seem to hurt. :( |
I would say be consistent whether they like it or not, and be patient and just practice it every day. Eventually, they will get used to it. I use a damp wash cloth and press gently on to the eye gunk and then take a flea comb and carefully comb it out. If the gunk is damp, it wouldn't hurt but it would hurt if it is dry. If they move constantly, you probably have to hold their muzzle firm and let them know your being serious and try to do it and eventually you can do without it but I never had to resort to doing that to my Yorkie so not sure how reliable it is. I have had a groomer telling me to firmly hold the hair their chin but I don't like to use a way that will cause them pain. |

Eye Goop No matter what method you use to clean your babys face and eyes, be sure to give a treat after. They will look forward to this and it helps them tolerate what they don't like if they know they will get a treat after you are done. |
Wet Wipes for kids work awesome!! Especially for an on the go clean look! |

I do occasionally use a wet washcloth and my nails to just get all the goo off. She lets me do that better. |
Cash doesn't want me to touch his face and I had to force him. I give him treats from the beginning and he has grown used to the grooming. If he is being incredibly stubborn, I hold the hair underneath his chin. I know it sounds mean, but it is merely used to get him to comply and I never hurt him this way. |
Juicy also doesnt like me touching her face, but if I show her treats she lets me. I use warm water and a wash cloth It works well. |
I use the calm eyes/cotton round makeup pads and also have a very small (2 1/2" moustache comb that works quite well. My little one doesn't care too much for having her eyes cleaned, but she tolerates it. I also give her a treat afterwards. |
Girlie no yorkie likes to have their face combed or for that matter face washed or combed.. you need to do this every day... consitency is the key.. they absolutely hate it.. but getting frustrated is not going to help you get the gunk out of her eyes... I also have a tiny face comb. so the larger combs see to scare them more.. like others have said do it.. talk gently.. if you do not get it right at first.. praise anyway once you have been trying.. let them think you won and they were good.. just keep doing it.. get this trust happening that you are not hurting... I have a baby of my own right now born dec 11th.. she lays on her back and I comb her face and clip her toenails.. again I taught her this and to trust me... Please do not get me wrong.. my dogs can run me as easily as anyones.. just trying to say how I do it.. anne |
